Position/PCN: IT Network Specialist
Position FTE: 1.0 FTE
Pay Grade: 15
Starting Wage: $26.19
Days Per Year: 260
Shift hours: 7-3:30pm
Class Summary: Under limited supervision, the Network Specialist is responsible for supporting and optimizing the district's local and wide area networks, telecommunications systems, and infrastructure hardware. This includes managing the configuration/installation, monitoring, and troubleshooting of switches, wireless access points, VoIP, camera systems, UPS devices, and related infrastructure.
The Network Specialist collaborates with Network Administrators, IT leadership, and contractors to ensure reliable connectivity across district facilities. The position emphasizes hands-on technical work, customer service, and proactive problem-solving to maintain efficient, secure, and resilient network operations.
Distinguishing Characteristics: This role provides advanced technical support for building-level and districtwide network systems.
Duty No. Essential Duties 1 Analyze building and district network needs and engineer solutions for efficient wired/wireless connectivity and telecommunications continuity. 2 Configure, monitor, and manage switches, wireless equipment, VoIP systems, UPS devices, camera systems, and related infrastructure. 3 Manages installation and maintenance of infrastructure equipment and cabling. Utilizes and coordinates with other departments and outside contractors as necessary 4 Monitor network performance and proactively resolve connectivity, performance, and reliability issues. 5 Document and standardize procedures to ensure efficient installations, troubleshooting, and maintenance. 6 Assist in lifecycle management by identifying aging or unsupported equipment and providing data for refresh planning. 7 Provide on-site and remote troubleshooting support for staff and systems, escalating complex issues as needed. 8 Support the evaluation and testing of emerging technologies and make recommendations for adoption. 9 Assists with project development from the initial preparation and planning of the project to the procurement and installation of equipment services. 10 Develop and maintain troubleshooting documentation and knowledge base resources for IT staff.

Knowledge: Previous education training, work or life experience which provides reasonable evidence of successful performance of various tasks listed above. Such experience may be evidenced by three to five years of progressively responsible experience in local area network analysis, design, installation, configuration, and support, three to five years of advanced technical support of PC hardware, software and operations systems. A bachelor's degree in related field, or course work toward that degree, is desirable. Current certification in or work towards the following certifications: CCENT, CCNA, CWNP, also desirable.

Training and Experience (position requirements at entry Minimum three-year network/technical support of a like environment. Active Directory, Microsoft Windows, Mac OS, iOS, CLI, and Scripting skills experience. Understands and has experience working on a physical networks with both Ethernet and Wireless connectivity using TCP/IP, 802.11ac/ax, OSPF, VOIP telephony, and telecommunications protocols. Familiarity with virtualization and server operating systems.
Licensing Requirements (position requirements at entry): Must have a valid Alaskan Driver's License.
Physical Requirements: Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Must be able to distinguish colors, must be able to work at heights (Ladders and aerial work platform), in close spaces, and outdoors in inclement environments.
