Department Manager - Building Enclosure

The Building Science Solutions (BSS) Group within Intertek's Building and Construction is recruiting a Department Manager – Building Enclosure for our St. Louis operation. The ideal candidate for this Department Management position will have a solid background in building enclosure and building envelope consulting for new and existing buildings, as well as management and leadership experience. They should also have an interest in leading project teams, developing a client base, building the local BSS team and business, and contributing technically to our overall team. 

The Department Manager - Building Enclosure is responsible for the execution of technical work, financial performance of the department, and growth of the business.

With regional team members in both St. Louis and Kansas City, the Department Manager will oversee both locations, and can be primarily located in either St. Louis or Kansas City.

What you will do:

  • Follow and enforce safety and compliance requirements and company policies
  • Manage Building Science Solutions projects within assigned region(s)
  • Lead in regional business development, marketing, and sales efforts
  • Provide building enclosure consulting, commissioning, and design and construction administrative services for new building projects
  • Provide building enclosure investigations and assessments for existing building, and provide remedial repair designs and construction administrative services when requested
  • Prepare proposals for potential new work
  • Assisting in meeting profit center financial goals
  • Prepare professionally written deliverables, including proposals, technical report, design reviews, etc.
  • Provide on-the-job training and mentoring
  • Assist in hiring and training new building sciences team members, and mentor existing team members
  • Assist the department manager with developing business and clients in the local area and assisting with national, larger pursuits outside of the local area
  • Grow the local BSS office by balancing staff workloads and bringing in new work such that staff are adequately utilized
  • Participation in professional organizations, author papers, attend conferences, and/or perform work on technical committees

What it takes to be successful in this role:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Architecture, Engineering or Architectural Engineering with 7+ years of building enclosure industry experience required

OR

  • We will also consider 10+ years' experience in Building Enclosure consulting/industry in lieu of the bachelor's degree
  • Professional registration or ability to obtain registration within one year, preferred
  • Technical understanding of building enclosure systems and construction.
  • Experience with managing, leading, and developing staff, both technical and administrative required
  • Experience in managing a range of small to large projects
  • Ability to perform work from ladders, boom-lifts, scaffolds, swing stages, roofs, etc.
  • Strong planning and organizational skills, with the ability to meet changing and strict deadlines.
  • Strong technical writing and communication skills
  • Consistent and professional interaction and communication with clients and project team
  • Ability to travel up to 25% outside local area, depending on local work load and project locations
  • Must have a valid driver's license and an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment physical and drug screening

Preferred Skills:

  • Field and technical experience with diverse building types
  • Computer modeling (e.g. energy modeling)
  • Building enclosure testing 
  • Property / façade condition assessments
  • Microsoft Office Suite and Bluebeam
  • AutoCad/Revit/BIM/Sketch-up proficiency
