Intertek, a leading provider of quality and safety solutions to many of the world's top-recognized companies, is actively seeking a Project Specialist to join our Building & Construction Building Science Solutions (BSS) team in New York City!

Intertek's Building & Construction Group is comprised of industry leaders across multiple architecture, engineering, and construction disciplines, developing the most innovative services and project solutions. Our project-related assurance, testing, inspection, and consulting services provide the risk management and quality assurance the industry needs to ensure the reliability, safety, and performance of new building developments, existing assets, and facilities. Building Science Solutions (BSS) focuses on building enclosure consulting, building enclosure commissioning (BECx), and enclosure field performance testing for new construction, existing and retrofit projects.

What You'll Do

The Project Specialist will assist project managers and senior team leadership to ensure the success of our projects during various phases of design and construction. Your work will include new construction enclosure consulting and commissioning during design and construction phases, plus evaluation, investigation, and repairs for existing buildings.

Key Responsibilities:

  • New Design & Existing Remediation 
    • Develop skills in understanding design documents for new construction and the preparation of sketches and details using AutoCAD and manual hand-drawn techniques
    • Learn/assist with remediation of existing building enclosures
  • Technical Documentation 
    • Prepare professionally written field reports and survey documents
    • Develop skills in building enclosure reviews of architectural drawings, specifications, shop drawings and submittals
  • Forensic Investigation 
    • Assist with/perform forensic investigations and documentation of existing conditions including wall claddings, windows, curtain wall systems, roofs, skylights, plaza waterproofing and below-grade elements
  • Field Testing & Inspection 
    • Perform/assist with field performance testing and water leakage testing of roofing and waterproofing systems, windows, curtain walls, and other building enclosure elements
    • Conduct construction administration services and site visits

Schedule: Monday – Friday, core business hours
Travel: 25%-70% (within and outside local area, depending on workloads and project locations)

Salary & Benefits Information

The base wage or salary range for this position is $65,000 - $85,000. Individual compensation packages are based on a variety of factors unique to each candidate including skill set, experience, qualifications, and other job-related reasons.

What We're Looking For

Minimum Requirements & Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Related Engineering, or Construction Management
  • Experience: 
    • Preferred: 2 years of building enclosure consulting or enclosure commissioning experience
    • Alternative: Relevant architecture, engineering, or construction management experience with demonstrated interest in building science may be considered (though direct experience in enclosure consulting is highly preferred over relevant experience)
    • New graduates with strong academic performance and relevant internships are also encouraged to apply
  • Technical Knowledge: Building construction, building enclosure systems and building science
  • Field Experience: Construction administration, progress observation, and site inspection
  • Certifications: Supported and suspended scaffolding certification required. 4-hour supported scaffold user and refresher certification, and 16-hour suspended scaffold user certification. Certifications shall be active and non-expired.
  • Other Requirements: 
    • Valid driver's license with reliable driving record
    • Fluency in English for safe and effective job performance
    • Ability to travel frequently (25%-70% of time)

Technical Skills:

  • Proficiency in AutoCAD (2D drafting and detail development)
  • Understanding of building codes (NYC Building Code, IECC, ASHRAE standards preferred)
  • Knowledge of waterproofing systems, curtain walls, and roofing assemblies
  • Field testing equipment operation (water spray testing, blower door testing)
  • Report writing and technical documentation

Preferred Requirements & Qualifications:

  • 2 years of building enclosure consulting experience
  • Degrees in Architecture or Engineering
  • Direct experience working in the New York City area and Greater Metro Region
  • Currently residing in one of the 5 boroughs or adjacent Metro Region.
  • On a track to professional licensure in NY State; RA or PE

Physical Demands & Work Environment

This role requires physical capability to perform both office and field work:

  • Mobility: Ability to stand, walk, sit, talk, hear, and occasionally kneel and climb
  • Field Work: Perform inspections from ladders, boom-lifts, scaffolds, and roofs
  • Outdoor Conditions: Work outdoors in all seasons and safely work at elevated heights
  • Vision: Close and far vision abilities required for detailed inspection work
