PURPOSE OF POSITION: 

  • Manage day-to-day shop operations and team along with assisting in the service and repair of all transportation equipment. 

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Service, repair, and ensure our all fleet vehicles and trailers meet DOT requirements. Vehicles and trailers include, but are not limited to:
    1. Class 8 trucks
    2. Medium and light duty trucks
    3. Livestock trailers 
  • Wire welding -- aluminum and steel. 
  • Mechanics will provide basic tools they need to utilize daily. 
    1. Specialty tools are provided by Iowa Select Farms. 
  • Review work tickets and assist with weekly schedule of services and repairs.
  • Build, manage, and monitor the mechanic's schedule to ensure the team is working efficiently, and turning around repairs in a timely manner.  
  • On-going training of the team along with monitoring everyone's work to ensure its quality, and giving proper feedback in a timely manner if adjustments need to be made. 
  • Exercising flexibility in shop scheduling to redirect team and address emergency issues as they arise.
  • Taking inventory as needed and ensuring proper parts are stocked and ordered according to shop needs while keeping cost and money saving tactics at top of mind. 
  • Assist with cost reduction strategies with management as needed.

  • Compliance with Iowa Select Farms safety policies and procedures which includes continuous education to maintain a safe work environment 
  • Follow Iowa Select Farms animal wellbeing policy at all times and partner with the Production Well-being team in a timely manner if an incident occurs

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • This position directly supervises employees and carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.  
  • Planning, assigning, and directing work responsibilities for others will be a major part of this position.
  • Provides employees, both current and new with updated training on positions that fall under applicable department(s). 
  • Be effective in conflict resolution by addressing conflict quickly to keep moral high – partner with HR as needed. 
  • Handles discipline of employees as needed and in accordance with company policy.
  • Conducts performance evaluations that are timely and constructive.
  • Rewarding employees in the form of positive feedback and utilization of company programs when performance in key areas is high. 
  • Achievement of consistent results.
  • Provide a unified leadership message with senior management.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • The environment of this position will change daily pending weekly schedule including doing work indoors and outdoors. 
  • This position may require some tasks to be performed in extreme outside weather conditions.
  • The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud.
  • While performing the duties of the job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibrations.  
  • The environment you will be working in may have nuisance levels of gases and dust, particularly in the winter months.

 

PHYSICALITY REQUIREMENTS

  • The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear.  
  • Ability to lift or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds.    
  • The employee must be able to continuously repeat necessary movements such as bending, lifting and different hand movements as needed to complete tasks.

 

POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK

  • This is a full-time position that will typically require at least 40 hours a week. 
  • Additional availability may be required during staffing challenges. 
  • Occasional evening hours and weekend work may be required as the job duties demand. 

 

TRAVEL

  • Local travel will be required for this position through the utilization of a company vehicle. 

 

 

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE and OTHER QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Extensive knowledge and proper experience with multiple makes/models of trucks and trailers included in the company fleet is a requirement. 
  • Proficiency with shop mechanic tools is a requirement. 
  • Experience with shop mechanic tools is a requirement.
  • A valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record is a requirement.
