Job Description

Kamehameha Schools (KS) Maui is one of three (3) campuses in our K-12 education system and home to 1,100 students and 250 faculty and staff. We are seeking a Cook IV (Temporary, On-Call) to support our Maui Campus Food Services team to provide locally sourced 'ono (delicious) meals for our K-12 haumana. Our Cook IV will be a self-starter and team player, with strong sense of Aloha (love or compassion) for our students, faculty, staff, team, and the meals that are prepared.  We desire candidates who model ku'upau, are aligned with KS' core values of pilina (fostering of meaningful relationships, particularly to our community and to the 'aina) as integral to their success. 

This is a temporary, on-call position with work hours based on operational need. Our Food Services operates on Monday through Friday with a 6:00am-2:30pm work schedule.  *This is subject to change based on programs and varying events. 

Job Summary

Entry level food service position responsible general cleaning, washing, dish washing, loading/unloading, set ups cafeteria and serving line and prep assistance to pantry and cooks.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Prepares dish room and dish machine for daily use; cleans and puts away all dishes, utensils, pots, pans, and other equipment at each meal; maintains cleanliness of dish machine, dish room and related equipment.
  • Cleans ,maintains, sets up and breaks down floors, tables, chairs and equipment in dining hall, service and ancillary areas including sweeping, mopping, stripping and refinishing resilient flooring; cleans and sanitizes food holding equipment; maintains cleanliness of windows, screens, lanais, storerooms and other related areas as directed.  
  • Assist baker, cooks and pantry with the preparation of food items according to recipes or normal culinary procedures as directed for meals and special functions. Assists with inventory control procedures as required.
  • Directs and oversees student workers and volunteers to insure duties are performed safely and efficiently. Sets up and services hot food stations and milk dispensers for each meal; assists in informing cooks when hot line food supplies are running low; maintains neatness of hot food station areas.
  • Transports food supplies, equipment and staff necessary for regular and special functions both on and off campus.
  • Occasionally drives off campus to pick up supplies from vendors. Loads and unloads food, supplies, and equipment to and from various sites and vehicles.

Position Requirements

Minimum Qualifications - An equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for the requirements listed.

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • 6 months or less of related work experience.
  • Valid Driver's License or ability obtain within 6 months of employment.
  • Willingness to drive or learn how to drive a large food service transporting vehicle safely (with training), to load, tie down and unload food equipment and to handle the electric gate lift.
  • Ability to work all shifts which include evening and weekend work.
  • Ability to follow directions and work independently as needed.
  • Ability to work cohesively within a team to meet production and service standards.

Physical and Mental Requirements

  • Frequently stand and/or walk, write by hand, and lift and/or carry items up to 35 pounds; push and/or pull objects that weigh up to 300 pounds.
  • Occasionally twist, bend, stoop, squat, kneel, and reach for supplies and equipment.

Working Conditions (including environmental conditions)   

  • Work is conducted in close proximity to hot equipment in humid surroundings.
  • Work is typically conducted Monday through Friday at normal business hours but evening and weekend hours are often required for special events.
