Kamehameha Schools Kapalama Campus is looking for 2 Academic Tutors to join the Student Support Center team. We are looking for 1 tutor to support our Math and Science and 1 tutor to support Hawaiian Language and Humanities. These positions will be responsible for providing academic support and interventions to our 9-12th grade students by providing tutoring support to students during school hours between 7:30am-3:30pm from Monday through Friday. Job SummaryProvides academic tutorial support to students at the Student Support Center during school hours and after school. Tutors students in small groups or one-to-one in various subjects. Assists students in achieving a better understanding of specific subject material in order to complete school assignments, homework, and projects. Maintains a weekly schedule of available hours in the Student Support Center.
Essential Responsibilities- Keeps records of students served and tasks accomplished. Meets with Student Support Center Coordinator as needed for training, evaluation, and consultation on student progress.
- General supervision of students using the Student Support Center – ensuring all students are in dress code, use appropriate behavior and language, access only appropriate sites on student laptops.
- Helps students develop positive attitudes towards learning and school.
- Serves as a role model to students and demonstrates appropriate behavior and language while tutoring students. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications - An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of the requirements listed.
- Bachelor's Degree in subject area to be tutored.
- Minimum of 6 months of directly related experience working with school aged children and teachers/instructors.
- Ability to tutor in one or more of the following subjects: Pre-Algebra, Algebra, Geometry, Algebra 2, Biology, Chemistry, Hawaiian Culture, World History, Art History, Speech, English, Japanese, Spanish, Hawaiian, Technology.
- Able to work during between the hours of 8:45 am - 4:30 pm
- Thorough knowledge of content area tutoring in, especially those relating to courses common to 9th & 10th grade students.
- Ability to relate and work well with diverse students with varying learning needs and challenges.
- Strong interpersonal skills to interact positively with students and staff; must work efficiently in a team environment.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills to communicate effectively with students, parents, staff, and others.
- Good organizational skills to manage tasks and time efficiently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to teach lesson plans as directed by a teacher to individual and/or small/large groups of students.
- Knowledge and understanding of the development and behavior of applicable school age children.
- Knowledge of and sensitivity to Hawaiian culture and Hawaiian perspectives to work effectively with Hawaiian learners.
- Flexibility to adapt to change to meet the Center and program needs; may require flexible work hours.
- Ability to effectively manage and supervise large number of students and monitor their safety.
- Past teaching/tutoring experience with high school students desirable.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with students in small group and one-to-one settings.
- Ability to tutor in multiple subjects
- Knowledge of curriculum and instruction in Secondary Education.
- Experience working with school age children.
- Knowledge of KS organization, operations and programs.
Physical Requirements
- Frequently sits, perform desk-based computer tasks and grasp light or fine manipulation, talk or hear.
- Occasionally stand and/or walk, write by hand, and lift and/or carry, push and/or pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
- Rarely twist, bend, stoop, squat, kneel, crawl, climb, reach or work above shoulder, or grasp forcefully.
Working Conditions
- This position may involve traveling to various locations, including neighbor islands to conduct business.
- Work is conducted in an office environment and may require work to be conducted in non-standard workplaces.
- Work is typically conducted Monday through Friday at normal business hours.
