Kamehameha Schools is looking for a Principal Research Associate to join our Portfolio Support Services (PSS) team for KS Kaiāulu. The PSS team supports the operations, management, reporting, and execution of the KS Kaiāulu portfolio which includes community partners and other community based programs and services. The ideal candidate is someone with experience in research and evaluation, community based programs and services, an innovative thinker, detail oriented, a self-starter, and can thrive in a fast-paced work environment.

This is a Hybrid position which provides work from home flexibility on an approval basis.

Job Summary

Assists leadership by managing division or department-wide long- and short-term strategic planning and implementation efforts. Conceives, conducts and coordinates formative and summative program evaluation studies.

Coordinates and directs staff in research/evaluation efforts. Conceives and implements innovations in educational research, delivery or management. Continuously determines opportunities for enterprise-wide efficiencies through data-driven research, validated organizational best practices and parallel program assessment processes.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Directs projects by identifying project objectives and linkages to other work. Analyzes strategies and recommends approach based on standard professional practice. Identifies risks and strategies to minimize them. Drafts project documents and identifies and requests needed internal and external resources.
  • Implements multiple, concurrent projects given general direction as Principal Investigator or Project Manager. Reviews and directs Requests for Proposals (RFPs) to contract with vendors for project support. Manages vendor selection using established procedures. Manages own work, assignments to junior research staff and contracts with vendors on each project. Regularly assesses progress and recommends changes to timeline, resources, or project scope as needed. Leads project teams to achieve milestones and objectives.
  • Ensures formal close-out of projects. Reviews documented project implementation processes and lessons learned. Guides and directs the compilation of all data and products in appropriate locations. Ensures timely completion of vendor assessments.
  • Designs stand-alone research and evaluation projects. Independently identifies and summarizes existing research and evaluation literature. Mentors junior research staff in such efforts. Provides background and context for project design and eventual interpretation of findings. Establishes, interprets and analyzes project requirements for all projects with the department director. Recommends and models best-practice approaches for design of research and evaluation projects aligning to the project requirements. Ensures projects are feasible within project constraints and are consistent with the organization's strategy and tactical plans. Continually leverages opportunities for division- and group-wide efficiencies and knowledge generation across projects.
  • Performs data collection and analysis. Selects and adapts appropriate data collection tools and methodologies from established instruments and approaches. Manages the organization and implementation of data collection projects. Identifies and solves a range of straight-forward problems in data collection. Ensures the quality of data files and products through regular quality and consistency checks. Ensures the full documentation of all data files. Protects third-party confidential and Personally Identifiable Information (PII) data using standard professional and KS procedures.
  • Manages and guides department quantitative and qualitative data analyses with mastery of advanced statistical techniques.
  • Ensures understanding of stakeholder needs and interests in order to produce reports of findings for projects using standard best practices.
  • Works collaboratively with KS and collaborator program staff to develop and conduct research and evaluation projects.
  • Provides specialized support to multiple KS programs, departments, divisions and groups, as well as community partners and external colleagues. Conducts on-demand syntheses of data, methodologies and research. Serves as an expert in research, evaluation or education.
  • Authors scientifically rigorous printed, electronic and oral communications for multiple audiences.
  • Investigates alternative media for dissemination of research products.
  • May supervise department staff, including recruiting, performance appraisal, disciplining, coaching training, and project work scheduling.
Position Requirements

Minimum Qualifications - An equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for the requirements listed.

  • Ph. D. in Education, Social Science, Behavioral Science, Public Policy, or related field.
  • Five years experience in the design, management, and quality control of educational or social science research projects and/or evaluation studies.
  • Strong organizational skills to prioritize and handle complex, multiple, simultaneous projects and meet established timelines and deadlines.
  • Ability to conceive clearly articulated research questions & models.
  • Familiarity with directly relevant research literature base.
  • Ability to effectively synthesize and present data for managerial decision-making.
  • Demonstrated ability to remain flexible in a demanding work environment and to adapt to a rapidly changing environment.
  • Ability to analyze and conceptualize, and to work independently with a high degree of accuracy and with highly confidential information.
  • Strong communication (verbal, written, and visual) and interpersonal skills to work effectively with management and staff at various levels in the organization as part of a collaborative team.
  • Ability to use standard PC applications (word processing, spreadsheet, database, presentation, email/calendaring).
  • Strong working knowledge of and experience in automating office processes using standard office desktop applications.
  • Ability to be flexible, learn new systems and processes as required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and skill in organizational competencies of accountability, change effectiveness, collaboration and teamwork, communication, Hawaiian cultural commitment, and innovation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in data collection using tests or surveys, observation, and individual and small group interviews.
  • Experience in managing small and large data sets to include file construction for SAS, SPSS or other statistical applications.
  • Clear mastery of basic quantitative methods for data analysis, including descriptive statistics, analysis of variance, multiple regression analyses and multivariate analysis of variance.
  • Clear mastery of basic qualitative methods for data analysis, including identifying themes, coding, concept mapping and other visual techniques for organizing and presenting data.
  • Ability to perform statistical analyses using SAS, SPSS, or other statistical applications.
  • Experience in working with Trustees and Chief Executives.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently sits, perform desk-based computer tasks and grasp light or fine manipulation, talk or hear.
  • Occasionally stand and/or walk, write by hand, and lift and/or carry, push and/or pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
  • Rarely twist, bend, stoop, squat, kneel, crawl, climb, reach or work above shoulder, or grasp forcefully.

Working Conditions

  • This position may involve traveling to various locations, including neighbor islands to conduct business.
  • Work is conducted in an office environment and may require work to be conducted in non-standard workplaces.
  • Work is typically conducted Monday through Friday at normal business hours.
