Job Summary

Assists in the development, implementation and tracking of regional and/or statewide portfolios around education, 'aina, and/or other community engagement outcomes. Facilitates the alignment, integration and leveraging of KS resources (educational programs & facilities, commercial assets, 'aina assets, funding etc.) with that of external community resources. Develops innovative partnerships across the various KS units, Hawai'i Department of Education, key community landowners and businesses, University of Hawai'i system, government agencies, Native Hawaiian charter and immersion schools, and other community partners/collaborators in order to optimize impact of KS and partner resources in the communities we serve. Coordinates and supports the Director in providing for broad communication, relationship alignment, and change management purposes as it relates to programs, projects and strategy.  Supports regional and/or statewide planning, development, implementation, and assessment of key education and 'aina initiatives.

Essential Responsibilities

Planning and Strategy

  • Facilitates regional and/or statewide planning, strategy, management and implementation.  Ensures alignment of various regional, divisional and organizational strategies and actions.  Supports short and long range system-wide planning efforts via facilitation of discussion, data and statistical analysis, and/or operational program analyses. Works closely with other KS statewide functional departments and divisions to ensure alignment of KS' land assets, commercial assets, educational programs, scholarships, and community investing portfolio to accomplish strategic goals.  Identify and coordinates with regional community partners to recognize community barriers and opportunities to ensure alignment and consistency of education and/or 'aina initiatives and services across all KS functions and actions.  Manages and analyzes community-level data to develop strategies and interventions.

Community Relations, Communications and Operations Support

  • Plays a key role with unit Leadership in building relationships within the community and external resources, by, for instance, attending public meetings and community activities.  Collaborates with Communications Group and other KS groups to create synergies in plans, investments and programs.  Aligns and manages client expectations.  Communicates to internal and external audiences the project timelines and progress.  Leads coordination efforts to cross functional work groups in the various communities of the region and at KS to ensure projects are executed efficiently and effectively.  

Portfolio Leadership

  • Supports in the planning, execution, and reporting of a comprehensive regional and/or statewide portfolio of strategically aligned community related projects and services in alignment with specific learner, 'aina or community outcomes.  Responsible for helping to lead portfolio planning and analysis, which includes both short and long range system-wide statistical and/or operational program/project analyses. Facilitates gap analysis and developing, mapping, maintaining and updating related documentation, and coordinating cross function discussions with other KS-wide support units.

Project Management

  • Manages project planning and tracking, managing scope, activity, delivery, budget, and reporting to achieve KS' strategic goals.  Emphasizes the implementation, system assessments, quantitative and qualitative information syntheses, business modeling, business case development with viable solutions generation, solution impact analyses, implementation roll-out and transition planning and/or execution, performance management, and generation of written analyses and report deliverables for the project completion.  Executes and reports assigned initiatives.  Builds, leads and motivates project teams.  Facilitates project team meetings to problem solve to resolution and successful outcomes.  Keeps project team on task to meet project deadlines. 

Position Requirements

Minimum Qualifications - An equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for the requirements listed.

  • Bachelor's Degree in Education, Business, Social Services, Humanities, Natural Resource Management, Planning, Public Administration or closely related field.

  • Minimum 3 years project management, manager, or related experience.

  • Excellent, demonstrated verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to direct, guide and facilitate long and short range strategic planning across a cross-functional organization.
  • Able to relate with all levels of management, faculty, staff, external agencies, alumni, students, parents, and other school staff and other community stakeholders.
  • Ability to secure, coordinate, manage and supervise internal and external (consultant/contractor) resources to achieve project objectives.
  • Strong interpersonal skills which can provide leadership and guidance to content experts in the areas being assessed, decision makers who need to understand the assessment outcomes, or staff at various levels in the organization.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage multiple functions and priorities in an efficient manner.
  • Strong ability to influence, i.e. highly skilled in facilitating and working across functional areas and subsidiaries with which one has no direct responsibility and authority to ensure alignment of interests and resource optimization.
  • Ability to maintain composure, tact, sensitivity and flexibility during peak periods and crisis intervention situations.
  • Ability to analyze and conceptualize, and to work independently with a high degree of accuracy and with highly confidential information.
  • Ability to methodically plan, execute and control moderate to high-risk/prioritized initiatives/projects.  Able to manage project scope, quality, cost and schedule to pre-determined constraints.
  • Negotiation skills for sensitive, high level collaboration in developing partnerships which support Kamehameha Schools' vision and reflect the best in educational and business thinking and trends.
  • Ability to plan and execute effective change management.  Must be able to collaborate with stakeholders to identify and apply the appropriate change methodologies.
  • Sound fiscal skills including cost-benefit analysis, budget projection analysis, etc.  Analyze and comprehend financial statements, system reports, and spreadsheets.
  • Self-motivated and dedicated.
  • Ability to use standard PC applications (word processing, spreadsheet, database, presentation, email/calendaring).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years of education, administrative, or business management work experience to include but not limited to effective management of systems supporting business, real estate, environmental (natural, cultural, water resources), or educational programs and operations. 
  • Experience in using data to design a “roadmap” for programmatic improvement through focused interventions (through project management skills).
  • Experience in working with the Native Hawaiian community.
  • Experience with 'aina/place/culture-based education models, curricula, programs and staff.
  • Experience working with DOE, UH, Charter Schools and other educational entities and systems.
  • Experience building community contacts and working relationships with a wide variety of groups.
  • Experience working with land and resource management professionals and entities.
  • Experience building a network, peer learning community, or other distributed organization and creating working relationships with a wide variety of groups.
  • Experience and knowledge working in structured project environments.
  • Experience working in a consulting firm or environment directly servicing and supporting clients.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently sit, perform desk based computer tasks and grasp light/fine manipulation.
  • Occasionally stand/walk, write by hand, and lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
  • Rarely twist/bend/stoop/squat, kneel, crawl, climb, reach/work about shoulder, grasp forcefully.

Working Conditions

  • Living in or willing to relocate to assigned Island.
  • This position involves traveling to various locations, including neighbor islands to conduct business.
  • Work is conducted in an office environment and may require work to be conducted in non-standard workplaces.
  • Work is typically conducted Monday through Friday at normal business hours but evening and weekend hours are often required to meet goals and objectives.
