SUMMARY:
This role is responsible for designing, implementing, and managing a company-wide chemical safety program to ensure the proper and safe handling, storage, usage, and disposal of hazardous substances across all company facilities. Through in-depth assessments of current operations, this role ensures that proper exposure controls are in place to protect employees. A core deliverable will be the creation of a detailed Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP), aimed at educating staff on safe practices related to chemical usage.

PRIMARY DUTIES:

  • Partner with teams across R&D, Production, and Engineering to analyze chemical processes, using the recognized hierarchy of exposure control (elimination, substitution, engineering controls, administrative actions, and PPE) to minimize health risks.
  • Build and maintain a comprehensive Chemical Hygiene Plan aligned with OSHA, ACGIH, and applicable industry standards; regularly update the plan in response to changes in practices or regulations.
  • Create and oversee emergency response strategies for chemical-related incidents, such as spills, exposures, or fires, and train staff to handle these situations effectively.
  • Manage and coordinate industrial hygiene monitoring activities for potentially hazardous operations.
  • Provide safety recommendations when introducing new chemicals or modifying chemical processes.
  • Act as the point of contact for chemical emergencies, overseeing investigations and documenting outcomes.
  • Ensure all Safety Data Sheets (SDS) are current and easily accessible to relevant personnel.
  • Conduct ongoing risk evaluations of chemical usage, storage facilities, and laboratory environments to identify and address potential safety issues.
  • Perform routine chemical safety inspections and audits to verify compliance with internal and external safety standards.
  • Recommend corrective actions and lead the implementation of solutions when safety deficiencies are found.
  • Verify that all hazardous materials are labeled in accordance with applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Identify and document necessary PPE for various chemical tasks and collaborate with the training team to ensure accurate instruction is provided.
  • Train internal safety managers and trainers on specific procedures for safe chemical handling.
  • Be available on-call during non-business hours to support emergency chemical response efforts. This would be very occasional.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in a related discipline such as Chemistry, Environmental Safety, or Occupational Health.
5+ years of experience managing chemical or laboratory safety programs in a production or industrial setting. Affiliation with ACGIH or possession of relevant certifications is an advantage.

Knowledge, Skills, and Attributes:

  • The ideal candidate will be personable and confident.
  • Strong working knowledge of OSHA, ACGIH, and EPA chemical safety regulations.
  • Demonstrated success in developing and maintaining chemical hygiene or environmental safety plans.
  • Deep understanding of hazardous chemical properties and controls.
  • Clear and confident communication abilities, with the skill to deliver safety training to staff at all levels.
  • Detail-oriented and calm under pressure, especially when managing emergency situations.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to regularly walk throughout the facility to conduct safety checks and inspections.
