TITLE:  Laboratory Assistant
PAY:  $20-21/hr       
DURATION:  8 months - possibility to extend
LOCATION:  Onsite – Johnston, IA
SCHEDULE:  M-F 8-4:30/5pm

Job Description
This position affords the opportunity to become familiar with breakthrough genomics technologies, platforms, and processes. The successful candidate will receive training in HMW and uHMW DNA isolation, and familiarize with optical mapping, sequencing, and other molecular biology strategies in support of ongoing plant genetics and breeding research programs. The candidate will perform bench-level molecular biology techniques, operate analytical instruments and ultimately record, compile and verify the accuracy of experimental data. He or she will be expected to assist in the comparison, development and deployment of protocols as needed.

Position Summary

  1. Participates in activities in support of Long DNA technologies lab operations.
  2. Such activities may include some or all the following processes and methods:
  • Cell and nuclei isolation, ultra-high molecular weight (uHMW) DNA purification and quantification, DNA gel electrophoresis.
  1. Receives training in core technologies and assists in the operation of some or all the following:
  • PacBio SMRT sequencing, Illumina sequencing, Bionano DLS optical mapping and Oxford Nanopore sequencing.
  1. Learns how to use and operate all support equipment, which may include centrifuges, DNA analyzers, fluorometers, thermal cyclers and microscopes. 
  2. Accomplishes quality assurance.
  • Maintains lab equipment and adequate level of lab supplies to assure timely achievement of lab activities.
  1. Maintains accurate and timely records as needed by the research projects.
