POSITION SUMMARY: 

The National Institutes of Health is seeking a motivated Protein Purification Biologist specializing in downstream process development for recombinant proteins, virus vaccines, and virus-like particles (VLPs) aimed at clinical trial applications. The ideal candidate will hold a Bachelor's degree in Bioengineering, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, or a related discipline, with 1-2 years of experience in recombinant protein purification development for GMP clinical-phase products. This role involves collaborating within the purification group to design, develop, and optimize chromatography and filtration processes, supporting technology transfer to the Pilot Plant for clinical product manufacture, and contributing to the mRNA-Lipid Nanoparticle (LNP) program. The successful candidate will also be responsible for preparing materials, writing and reviewing technical protocols and reports, coordinating with project management, and working with the Data Science and Automation (DSA) group to create data analysis/visualization packages. Familiarity with microfluidic systems for mRNA-lipid nanoparticle encapsulation and the ability to perform scale-up operations are essential. 

 

TASKS. The contractor shall: 

  • Develop downstream processes for recombinant proteins, virus vaccines, and VLPs. 

  • Collaborate to design and optimize chromatography and filtration step unit operations. 

  • Purify research-phase recombinant proteins, virus vaccines, and/or VLPs. 

  • Prepare materials in support of downstream process activities. 

  • Support technology transfer of processes to the Pilot Plant for clinical product manufacture. 

  • Write and review technical protocols and reports. 

  • Analyze and compile data, present findings at group/department meetings. 

  • Coordinate with project management to meet development milestones and study deliverables timely. 

  • Work with the DSA group to create data analysis/visualization packages. 

  • Design and execute process development studies for mRNA-LNP encapsulation. 

 

REQUIREMENTS. The contractor must have: 

  • Bachelor's degree in Bioengineering, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, or related discipline. 

  • 1-2 years of experience in recombinant protein purification development for GMP clinical-phase products. 

  • Demonstrated ability to maintain accurate and detailed records. 

  • Team player with effective cross-functional collaboration skills. 

  • Strong oral and written communication skills. 

  • Familiarity with computer software for word processing and data evaluation. 

  • Experience with microfluidic systems and scale-up operations for tech transfer.
