Description

R&D Lab Technician I
Location: Florence, SC
Pay rate: $18.00 per hour
Contract length: 12 months

Summary:
Assists and supports research laboratory operations through daily housekeeping of the laboratories including hand washing, cleaning, drying, and storing of glassware; waste removal and disposal; keeping lab chemical inventory updated; maintaining laboratory stock supplies; working to ensure all the laboratories comply with safety and regulatory rules; assisting in lab building preventative maintenance duties; receiving of supplies and chemicals, etc.

Essential Functions:

  • Follows all Standard Operating Procedures, and Environmental Health & Safety requirements.
  • Daily hand wash cleaning, drying, and storing of glassware for PRD labs
  • Ensures all general solvent containers are full and available for use
  • Waste removal and disposal from labs
  • Assist with performing monthly safety equipment inspections and building PMs.
  • Maintains laboratory waste stations using our EHS guidelines
  • Assists in oversite /maintenance of 90-day waste areas using EH&S site guidelines
  • Assists with maintaining and ordering of laboratory stock
  • Handles chemicals and other lab supplies for goods receipt and lab deliveries
  • Actively engages and assists coworkers to become a valuable team member
  • Independently organizes workspace for maximum efficiency
  • Performs work in a proactive manner
  • Maintains work areas and laboratory spaces in a clean and compliant manner
  • Must be able to adapt schedules and priorities to meet business needs

Experience:
  • No prior experiences are required. Experience with chemicals or waste is desired. All training will be in-house and on the job.

Physical Requirements:
Position requires ordinary ambulatory skills and physical coordination sufficient to move about laboratory locations; ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch periodically, manipulation (lift, carry, move) of light to medium weights of 10-35 pounds; arm, hand and finger dexterity, including the ability to grasp; visual acuity to use a keyboard, computer monitor, operate equipment, and read materials for prolonged periods; ability to sit, reach with hands and arms, talk, and hear for prolonged periods. Daily use safety glasses, safety shoes, a lab coat, latex or similar gloves, a safety apron, and an organic respirator (occasionally).

Further details:
  • Responsible for adhering to safe work practices & EH&S Compliance. Identify and report any safety concerns/issues; correct them whenever possible.
  • Help lab personnel regarding updated or new procedures for waste disposal, cost savings, and storage.
  • Glassware cleaning and stocking for all PRD labs daily.
  • Maintain solvent stock, inventory, and container filling for MSAT-ARD & PRD labs including proper labeling.
  • Hazardous and non-hazardous waste disposal for all 18 labs in our PTC-801 building including satellite waste stations for both liquid and solid, lab pack, used glass-broken glass boxes, etc.
  • Broken glass box set-up and disposal; Use glass collection for disposal via crush for recycling, monitor drum, and replace when needed.
  • Maintain all waste containers for safety and ensure proper labeling including secondary containment. Lab pack stocking of containers for labs and ensuring empties are available in the closet, set up new containers as needed, and transport full containers to our 90-day waste area.
  • Assist in maintaining waste stations and our 90-day room via good housekeeping per guidelines provided by EH&S to ensure the safety of all who utilize the area.
  • Assist in performing monthly safety equipment inspections and building PMs.
  • Aid in performing Lab walk-throughs with area managers for improvements & corrections to promote safety for EH&S policies & compliance.
  • Assist in stocking and upkeep our stock-storage areas such as reactor supply, disposable lab supplies, lab pack, solvent room, lab coat closet, large-scale engineering lab, etc. Keep all PPE, safety glasses, lab coats, over-suits, sleeve covers, and gloves stocked.
  • Maintain/refill inventory of solvent bottles, gloves, Kim-wipes, vials, etc. for individual labs.
  • Assist in maintaining inventory for gas cylinders, Lab coats, spill cabinets, first aid kits, lab packs, hazardous waste label stations, lab pack label stations, solvents, chemicals, disposable Lab materials, office supply closet, reactor closet, and MSAT support cleaning supplies in stock areas.
