ICU RN Opportunities at VA Medical Center – Houston, TX

Are you an experienced ICU nurse passionate about serving veterans and working in a state-of-the-art medical environment? Join our team at the VA Medical Center in Houston and contribute to exceptional patient care while enjoying competitive compensation and flexible scheduling.

Position Requirements

  • At least 1 year of recent critical care experience (within the past 5 years) in a specialty such as SICU, MICU, ICU, PACU 
  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program (CCNE or ACEN).
  • Proof of unrestricted RN license from a U.S. jurisdiction.
  • Valid BLS certification (required for all departments).
  • ACLS certification required for SICU, IMCU, CCU, ICU
  • Please do not submit candidates who do not meet these specialty requirements (e.g., LTAC RNs for ICU roles).
  • No visible tattoos, artificial nails, eyelashes, piercings, or gauges are permitted (per VA Quality Assurance guidelines).
  • Resume must show no employment gaps in the past 5 years.
  • Must pass a drug test prior to starting.
  • Potential start date of December 1.

Scheduling Best Practices

  • Monthly schedule opens 2nd MondayA minimum of three 12-hour shifts per week required (with occasional opportunities for a fourth shift).
  • Four weekend shifts per month are required (could be two full weekends or any arrangement that totals four shifts). If you call out for a weekend shift, the VA will automatically assign you to work the following weekend.
  • Schedules are finalized by VA staff to ensure coverage and fairness.

  • Nursys Verification
  • BLS & ACLS (if required)
  • Skills Checklist
  • Three professional references (contact info required)
  • Qualified applicants will be invited for an in-person meet and greet with VA providers.
  • Orientation takes place on Wednesdays: Training is Wed-Fri, followed by shadowing in week two, with independent practice starting week three.

Compensation

  • $56.36/hour plus $5.09/hour Health & Welfare (H&W) stipend
