Scientist 2 – Oligonucleotide Analytics (Research & Development)

Location: La Jolla, CA (Fully Onsite)
Pay Rate: $52.26/hour (Contract, W-2)
Contract Length: 12 months 
Schedule: Full-time, 8 hours/day (preferred 9 AM – 5 PM)

About the Role

Johnson & Johnson is seeking a highly motivated Scientist 2 – Oligonucleotide Analytics to join our Research & Development team in La Jolla, CA. In this role, you will be responsible for analyzing, optimizing, and ensuring the quality of oligonucleotides (siRNA and ASO) using advanced analytical techniques. This is a hands-on laboratory role, supporting innovative gene therapy projects in neuroscience (e.g., Alzheimer's research).

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate LC-MS systems to perform quality testing of oligonucleotides.

  • Develop, optimize, and implement analytical methods (LC-MS, HPLC) for oligonucleotide characterization.

  • Adapt testing methods for different modifications (e.g., GalNAc, cholesterol, C16).

  • Establish and automate high-throughput analytical workflows to support increased lab productivity.

  • Perform additional analyses using HPLC-SEC, RP-IP, ion-exchange chromatography, and UV/Vis.

  • Conduct QC testing for lipid nanoparticle (LNP) formulations of mRNA.

  • Support cross-functional teams by providing accurate data on integrity and concentration of samples.

  • Maintain lab readiness by managing consumables and reagents.

  • Present results and project updates in team and departmental meetings.

Qualifications

Education

  • Ph.D. in Chemistry or related field strongly preferred, OR

  • Master's degree with 5+ years of relevant experience

Experience & Skills

  • 1–3 years of hands-on experience at the Scientist level (or equivalent training such as postdoc).

  • Proven expertise operating LC-MS systems (Thermo LTQ or Orbitrap preferred).

  • Prior experience with oligonucleotide analysis (siRNA, ASO, nucleotides/nucleosides) is required.

  • Strong background in HPLC/UPLC methods and method optimization.

  • Familiarity with high-throughput analytical workflows and troubleshooting.

  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills; ability to thrive in a collaborative, fast-paced environment.
