Through our partnership with the National Institutes of Health, Kelly Government Solutions offers administrative, IT, engineering, scientific, and healthcare professionals the opportunity to work with the leading medical research center in the world.  We are seeking a Viral Biologist at the National Institutes of Health in Gaithersburg, MD


This is a long-term contract position which offers:

TASKS/SERVICES. The contractor shall: 

  1. Contribute to the generation of stable cell lines for vaccine and therapeutic protein candidates including monoclonal antibodies, recombinant proteins, and virus-like particles.
  2. Prepare plasmid DNA using standard molecular cloning techniques including PCR, restriction digest, and bacterial culture.
  3. Independently execute each step of the cell line development process:
    • Transfection
    • Pool generation
    • Single cell cloning
    • Clone expansion in static culture plates and shake flasks
    • Fed-batch analysis
    • Clone stability studies
  4. Use automated platforms for clone selection and screening.
  5. Participate in cell line development platform design, optimization, and cycle-time reduction studies including methods for clone selection, expansion, ranking, and characterization.
  6. Perform small-scale process development studies using various culture vessels including tissue culture plates, shake flasks, and small-scale bioreactors.
  7. Generate stable pools and perform transient protein production for supply of reagent-grade material.
  8. Independently complete experiments and analyze data with minimal oversight.
  9. Provide laboratory support for medium preparation and ordering of supplies.
  10. Provide maintenance and support for core laboratory equipment (ambr15 automated high-throughput microbioreactor system– used for all cell line development projects for top clone screening):
    • Maintain inventory of all associated supplies
    • Train team members on proper usage, programming, and data retrieval
    • Respond same day to requests from team members for troubleshooting support
    • Perform routine maintenance and arrange service visits as needed
  11. Write and review technical reports documenting process development studies and stable cell line generation work.
  12. Work with other team members to generate experimental plans for process development studies.
  13. Write and review standard operating procedures for cell line development processes and instrumentation under the direction of the FTL.
  14. Maintain complete documentation records, including a detailed and up-to-date laboratory notebook, to support regulatory filings.
  15. Coordinate cell line development projects in collaboration with the project lead and Federal Task Leader:
    • Plan experiments to fit within required timelines
    • Communicate any issues or delays promptly and help to identify solutions
    • Maintain cell line development master sheet file with all critical information and data
  16. Regularly communicate progress to project lead and present work to cell line development team.
  17. Participate in project meetings.
  18. Contribute results and studies for publication in peer-reviewed journals.


REQUIREMENTS. The contractor must have: 
  1. B.S. in Biological Sciences with a minimum of 4 years of relevant work experience
  2. Hands-on experience with aseptic technique and mammalian cell culture along with supporting technologies for cell line engineering including cell counting, high-throughput transfection, single-cell cloning, and flow cytometry
  3. Experience in preparing technical reports, standard operating procedures, and data presentations
  4. Ability to work independently to execute defined experiments and troubleshoot issues as needed to meet project timelines
  5. Ability to effectively communicate plans, results, challenges, and ideas to other team members in oral and written forms
  6. Familiarity with computer software for word processing and data analysis (Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, Prism, FlowJo)
  7. Experience in monoclonal antibody and/or vaccine production
