Job Summary

The Executive Director Risk Management and Insurance Services will be an integral leader in the Risk Management and Insurance Services Departments with the goal of reducing risk exposures and effectively managing liability. The Executive Director collaborates with members of the internal team and external attorneys and third-parties to facilitate resolution of liability/claims management and oversee risk management activities as assigned by Department leaders.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education: Juris Doctorate (J.D.)
Minimum Years of Experience: Seven (7) years of progressive experience in risk management or similar field as approved internally  and/or insurance (ideally including medical professional liability and general liability) and/or related field to include but not be limited to legal; Five (5) years of leadership experience preferred in prior areas of related experience, including legal and/or insurance claims management. 
Substitutable Education & Experience: In lieu of above experience combination, those with a Juris Doctorate (J.D.) that are licensed or eligible to be licensed in South Carolina (SC) with five (5) years of progressive experience in the medical and/or legal field. 
Required Certifications/Licensure: None.
Required Training: Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively with all levels of the organization; Expertise and experience in the areas of clinical risk, legal healthcare experience, and claims and litigation management. 

Essential Functions
  • Stays abreast of current issues in loss prevention, insurance, risk management, and patient safety.
  • Assists in identifying incident/event trends with direction/guidance in implementing improvement actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Provides leadership to staff handling professional liability, general liability, and Workers' Compensation litigated and non-litigated claims.
  • Assists with strategy and oversight for the claims, insurance, and enterprise risk management program.
  • Negotiate settlements under specific direction of Department leader.
  • Assists in obtaining various lines of insurance coverage in order to obtain the broadest coverage for the most cost effective price.  
  • Assists in overseeing reporting processes to insurance carriers. 
Duties & Responsibilities
  • Assists in performing captive insurance company business functions.
  • Collaborates and facilitates ongoing development of patient safety and related strategic plans with a focus on development of safe culture.  
  • Knowledge and experience in insurance, enterprise risk management, and claims management.
  • Strong financial acumen, as well as understanding the financial impact of decisions and their impact on the captive and the organization.
  • Providing data analysis and preparing and processing reports to Department leaders.
  • Undertaking research on current market/organizational risk initiatives.
  • Other duties as assigned at the direction of Department leaders.
