Job Summary

The one year Coding Fellowship Program is designed to foster the development of medical coding, or auditingand billing skills in individuals committed to a career in medical coding or auditing. This program is being designed for those who are credentialed in either coding or auditing but lack practical experience.The Fellow will receive hands-on experience to include working claim denials, compliance auditing, prebill claim edits and diagnostic and procedural coding. These experiences will utilize the ICD 10 CM and ICD 10 PCS classification system and the CPT and HCPCS billing system to submit compliant claims following CMS guidance. The Fellow will also learn to develop research skills as it relates to governmental and state laws regulating coding and billing requirements. The Fellow will function as amember of the Compliance Coding and CDI team with the goal to develop their individual skillset with support from departmental guided experience.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education: High School Diploma or Equivalent
Minimum Years of Experience: None.
Substitutable Education & Experience (Optional): None.
Required Certifications/Licensure: Certified Professional Coder- Apprentice (CPC-A), Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Professional Medical Auditor (CPMA), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) 
Required Training: Knowledge of general medical terminology and anatomy;
Working knowledge of personal computer applications (word processing, spreadsheet, email and database applications).

DURATION OF PROGRAM: One Year**

Essential Functions
  • Maintains a positive attitude and adheres to LMC Service Expectations.
  • Must be able to work independently and follow directions closely.
  • Works collaboratively with coding education and leadership staff.
  • Strong attention to detail and critical thinking to interpret policies and follow guidelines.
Duties & Responsibilities
  • Ensures timely completion when working denials, edits, and coding of outpatient accounts.
  • Works as a team with physicians, coding staff, and other hospital personnel to ensure proper and accurate code assignment and continuous quality improvement.
  • Reports to work in a timely manner and adheres to attendance policies. Conscientious of scheduling time off in advance so as not to interfere dramatically with coding turnaround times.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
