General Summary of Position
Provides spiritual counseling guidance and sacramental care to patients families and staff. Offers spiritual care services to adult patients and families using theological and clinical training to help patients and families cope more effectively with life and/or end of life issues.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities


  • Assesses the patient's spiritual practices/values and assists in accommodating and integrating these values into the patient's plan of care. Evaluates patient's needs for spiritual guidance and counseling and initiates or recommends individual programs and services to meet those needs. Cooperates with health care team in assisting patient to make personal adjustments.
  • Assists the patient/family to integrate their spiritual practices/values in order to understand implications of the suggested medical treatment plan to work through difficult issues and to work effectively with the interdisciplinary health care team.
  • Communicates the spiritual assessment results as needed to the patient's interdisciplinary health care team.
  • Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies procedures quality standards and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
  • Documents in the plan of care as well as writes a progress note after visitation.
  • Ensures that pertinent information regarding faith denomination parish/congregation and date of anointing are properly entered into the computer. Ensures that documentation is performed in accordance with hospital/facility policy and procedure.
  • Follows departmental schedule giving the hospital 24hour seven-day-a-week coverage. Accepts night call if scheduled.
  • Participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts as required.
  • Participates in spiritual programs and services that meet the needs of patients/families hospital associates and medical staff. If requested by the Director plans and organizes such services.
  • Participates in the administering of the Sacraments performance of religious rites and if necessary arranges for an outside minister to do so.
  • Participates on special projects as directed or requested including representing the hospital at interfaith meetings community events etc. as requested.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Prepares and communicates any necessary reports to the Director/Manager.
  • Provides for specific needs of individual faiths by fostering an ecumenical approach to hospital ministry. Conducts scheduled religious/worship services and prayer services or arranges for visiting clergy to do so.
  • Minimal Qualifications
    Education
    • Bachelor's degree of Divinity required or
    • Master's degree of Divinity required or
    • equivalent educational background meeting requirements for certification by the College of Chaplains required or
    • the National Association of Catholic Chaplains. required
    Experience
    • Less than 1 year Parish ministry or other pastoral ministry experience preferably in a hospital/healthcare setting required
    Licenses and Certifications
    • Certification by a Chaplain's certifying body preferred and
    • If a priest or minister ordained by recognized religious body and endorsed by the proper ecclesiastical authority. required and
    • If a lay person endorsed by the proper ecclesiastical authority. required
    Knowledge Skills and Abilities
    • Counseling communication and listening skills.
    • Some expertise in the ethical/moral field.
    • Basic computer skills preferred.

    USD $59,820.00 - USD $101,836.00 /Yr.
