General Summary of Position
The Central Sterile Supply Technician III performs under direct supervision all the functions expected of the Central Sterile Supply Technician I and II. They assist in orientation of new employees to each work assignment area and overall department operation. They will serve as a resource person for all the following functions: decontamination, prep and packaging and sterilization of all surgical trays and unit procedure trays. The Central Sterile Supply Technician III possesses a high level of familiarity with surgical instrument technology including preventative maintenance procedures, functionality, cleaning standards and distribution functions as it relates to case carts, exchange carts, par level carts and inventory control. The Central Sterile Supply Technician III ensures that the items being prepared for sterilization are clean, function properly, and are in good repair. They have the ability to differentiate between steam and low temperature sterilized supplies. They must package supplies according to the manufacturer's specifications. The Central Sterile Supply Technician III assumes the lead role for the unit or department functional areas (e.g. surgical specialty - Orthopedics) and identifies, receives approval for, and maintains department specific goals (e.g. monitoring Sterilization Records for accuracy) in the absence of the Lead Central Sterile Supply Technician.

Education
- High School Diploma or GED required
Experience
- 3-4 years Experience as a central sterile supply technician II required
Licenses and Certifications
- Current certification as a Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) required and
- Current Certification as a Certified Instrument Specialist (CIS) required
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to comprehend and follow the policies and procedures for MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center.
- Ability to read, write and speak or communicate in English to successfully accomplish the essential duties of the position.
- Ability to demonstrate ethical behavior that supports the hospital's mission, values and commitment to compliance with all federal, state and regulatory laws. Inspires trust and exhibits honesty and integrity within the scope of daily activities.
- Exhibits professionalism, courtesy and excellent customer service, while interacting with patients, guests and co-workers.

- Must adapt the hours of availability, including shifts, to the variable and changing needs of the hospital and/or department when needed.

- Must have the ability to prioritize tasks, have exceptional organizing skills and manage time effectively. MUST comply with OSHA, AAMI and the Joint Commission standards.
- Must have a thorough knowledge of aseptic techniques and procedures, sterilization techniques and procedures, infection control and work flow principles and requirements, equipment and supply processing; demonstrates and exercises responsible judgment to provide necessary supplies and equipment for patient care.
- Demonstrates compliance with patient safety and risk management protocols.
- Demonstrates self-directed learning initiatives and seeks ways to maintain current competency and respond to new clinical opportunities.
- Develops and promotes a commitment to service excellence within the work area by communicating with team members in a courteous and respectful manner and by demonstrating the ability to work in an environment of cooperation and collaboration.
