General Summary of Position
Coordinates and provides system management expertise and project direction for department of Perioperative Services. Provides leadership for planning, implementation and maintenance of computer systems and applications to meet internal and external reporting and support requirements. Evaluates existing or proposed systems for structure and accessibility to internal and external systems. Serves as the primary liaison to Information Systems department and external vendors for all technical aspects of systems supporting the division functions. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and Georgetown University Hospital's philosophy, policies, procedures and standards.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Directs, manages, and coordinates efficient and effective daily operations of automated surgical scheduling, post-op data entry, patient charges, and other system functions as required.
  • Provides analysis and recommendations on system enhancements. Serves as contact with vendor for contract negotiation, implementation, and ongoing support. Serves as systems resource/consultant to Perioperative Services and Hospital/Medstar leadership on the use of automated systems to support departmental activities and analysis as well as clinical and administrative requirements. Ensures effective integration of systems to achieve clinical and budgetary (operational and capital) goals of department and hospital. Oversees and makes recommendations of hardware allocation within the department.
  • Develops project plans and functions as the project manager on all system activities. Evaluates, prioritizes and manages system activities in support of new products, product enhancements, special requests, interfaces and new technology initiatives. Provides work status reports to management as required to meet scheduled target dates. Communicates project information and terms in lay terminology for presentations, meetings, and reports to management.
  • Oversees data management and technical testing and debugging of new or modified programs. Maintains master files and evaluates applications for problems and errors. Identifies and resolves system operating problems. Assures validity of system data and maintains up-to-date database. Collaborates on the design and directs the production of scheduled/ad hoc reports which support decisions concerning administrative and clinical activities.
  • Oversees and/or provides training to current staff in user departments on system changes and enhancements. Conduct training classes for new hires on surgical information applications. Serves as internal resource for systems guidance and training. Defines and supports surgical information needs, processes, and problem resolution for all user areas.
  • Documents procedures, systems and programs according to information systems standards to provide systems direction for the division.
  • Manages or performs the installation of new software packages and hardware and provides follow-up assistance.
  • Analyzes and investigates system methods and procedures related to assigned projects. Recommends modifications to improve the system and/or resolve the problem.
  • Performs personnel management functions for the designated area to include, but not limited to: interviewing, hiring, scheduling, coaching, counseling, orienting, evaluating and terminating employees.
  • Exemplifies Commitment to Care (C2C) standards and holds departmental staff accountable for conformity with the standards in all activities.

    Minimum Qualifications
    Education

    • Associate's degree accredited School of Nursing or Surgical Technology required or
    • Bachelor's degree in related field to position. required or
    • On-the-Job Training Knowledge of computer operations, network administration and system management as would normally be acquired through completion of a Bachelor's degree in Information Systems Technology. required

    Experience

    • 5-7 years Project management in implementation and system maintenance of an automated system with preference of experience with an or scheduling/inventory/charging system. required and
    • 1-2 years Minimum of two years supervisory experience. required and
    • Clinical experience in the operating room including the major surgical specialties. required

    Licenses and Certifications

    • RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure preferred or
    • CST - Certified Surgical Technologist preferred

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Excellent interpersonal skills and written communication to facilitate complete project implementation and to achieve project goals.
    • Familiarity with software and hardware, LAN knowledge preferred.
    • Detail oriented to maintain the integrity of the database.
    • Ability to assist and train users.
    • Ability to analyze and maintain validity of data.
    • Problem-solving skills to find solutions to difficult human, technical, clinical or administrative problems.
    • Ability to use independent judgement.


    This position has a hiring range of $80,995 - $152,027
