MedStar Harbor Hospital Float Pool Director of Nursing (DON) Job Overview

 

The Float Pool Director of Nursing is a member of MedStar Health entity-based Division of Nursing's (DON) leadership/management team and is responsible for over 110 staff to include Float Pool Nurses, Float Pool CNAs, Unit Secretaries, Clinical Coordinators, Sitters and Nursing Clinical Supervisors at newly magnet certified MedStar Harbor Hospital.

About MedStar Harbor Hospital

 

MedStar Harbor Hospital is a private nonprofit, 130+ bed, acute care teaching hospital. Its areas of specialty include general surgery, orthopaedics, oncology, women and infants' services, emergency medicine, internal medicine, behavioral health. Harbor Hospital also offers a medical residency program in internal medicine and a transitional program that prepares residents to specialize in other areas. In addition to receiving full accreditation from The Join Commission with certifications in Heart Failure, Pediatric Asthma Care, Spine Care and Stroke Care, it also received the Gold Seal of Approval for Behavioral Health over 5 years in a row and Gold Seal of Approval for Stroke Care and Spine Surgery for over 5 years in a row. Most recently, Harbor achieved its first magnet certification.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Creates a practice environment that exemplifies the values of patient care and implements a patient and nursing care delivery system which puts the patient first
  • Recognized as a professional role model who promotes an environment that supports the goals, mission, vision, philosophy and values of the Division of Nursing and MedStar Health
  • Facilitates the cost-effective utilization of available resources (human, material and financial) and ensures a high level of quality of care that is consistent with established standards of nursing practice for the patient populations served
  • Directs and coordinates the activities of professional and support personnel within the assigned areas
  • Assumes 24-hour administrative and leadership authority and responsibility for the management and direction of the operational, personnel and financial activities of the specified units/departments
  • Coordinates these functions in partnership with the nursing leadership team, Medical Staff and leaders of other departments/disciplines and ensures they are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and MedStar Health and entity's mission, vision, and values

    Minimum Qualifications
    Education

    • Bachelor's degree in Nursing from a Nationally accredited program required; Master's degree in Nursing or health related field from a Nationally accredited program preferred

    Experience

    • 4 years of nursing experience required; 2 years of management and leadership experience strongly preferred (such as an ADON, Clinical Coordinator, Assistant Nurse Manager, Team Lead), particularly in an acute care setting

    Licenses and Certifications

    • RN-Registered Nurse-State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure required upon hire; specialty certification from a nationally recognized nursing organization in either a clinical specialty or Nursing Administration preferred or must be obtained within two years of hire; BLS-Basic Life Support for healthcare professionals required upon hire

    KSAs

    • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to exercise independent judgment on highly complex situations; Verbal and written communication skills; Basic knowledge of various computer software applications and online learning applications, especially Microsoft PowerPoint and Excel
