General Summary of Position

MedStar Harbor Hospital Psychiatric Director of Nursing (DON) Role Overview

 

-Lead and manage nursing and patient care services for the adult inpatient and psychiatric crisis stabilization unit

-Oversee a team of 90+ professionals including Psychiatric RNs, Psychiatric -Counselors, PCTs, Unit Secretaries and a Recreation Therapist

-Develop and implement initiatives to enhance patient care, including the establishment of an ECT program

-Expand recruitment efforts to hire additional PCTs to support unit operations

-Foster a positive and supportive unit culture focused on excellence and compassion

-Functions as a unit manager

-Is supported by an Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON)

 

Adult Inpatient Psychiatric Unit Overview

 

36-bed acute adult inpatient psychiatry beds spread across two units of 24 and 12 beds, respectively

Evidenced-based mental health treatment

Hospital-based Protection Services (Security) Department

Experienced leadership

Psychiatric Emergency Department Crisis Unit Overview:

 

Ability to take up to 10-patients, including adult, adolescent, and pediatric patients

Provide therapeutic milieu and treatment until patients are appropriately dispositioned

About MedStar Harbor Hospital

 

Medstar Harbor Hospital is a private nonprofit, 130+ bed, acute care teaching hospital. Its area of specialty include general surgery, orthopaedics, oncology, women and infants' services, emergency medicine, internal medicine and behavioral health. Harbor Hospital also offers a medical residency program in internal medicine and a transitional program that prepares residents to specialize in other areas. In addition to receiving full accreditation from The Join Commission with certifications in Heart Failure, Pediatric Asthma Care, Spine Care and Stroke Care, it also received the Gold Seal of Approval for Behavioral Health over 5 years in a row and Gold Seal of Approval for Stroke Care and Spine Surgery for over 5 years in a row. Most recently, Harbor achieved its first magnet certification.

 


Primary Duties and Responsibilities


 

Minimum Qualifications
Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing from a Nationally accredited program required; Master's degree in Nursing or health related field from a Nationally accredited program preferred

Experience

  • 4 years of nursing experience required; 5+ years of management and leadership experience strongly preferred, particularly in an inpatient psychiatric environment

Licenses and Certifications

  • RN-Registered Nurse-State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure required upon hire; specialty certification from a nationally recognized nursing organization in either a clinical specialty or Nursing Administration preferred or must be obtained within two years of hire; BLS-Basic Life Support for healthcare professionals required upon hire

KSAs

  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to exercise independent judgment on highly complex situations; Verbal and written communication skills; Basic knowledge of various computer software applications and online learning applications, especially Microsoft PowerPoint and Excel
