Description

Provides direct patient care under the general direction of Registered Nurse and/or Advanced Practice provider in Occupational Health. Performs a variety of clinical procedures for assigned clients (employees, employee candidates and contracted vendor employees). Administers medications per established hospital policy/departmental protocol/procedure.
Education

  • High School Diploma or GED required and
  • Completion of a formal Licensed Practical/Vocational Nurse program required
Experience
  • 1-2 years Experience as a licensed practical nurse with previous experience in administering medications and phlebotomy required
Licenses and Certifications
  • LPN - Licensed Practical Nurse - State Licensure Valid Practical Nurse license in the State of Maryland or DC required or
  • LVN - Licensed Vocational Nurse Valid Vocational Nurse license in the State of Maryland or DC required and
  • CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (includes BLS and NRP) for healthcare providers from either the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross within 90 Days required and
  • Additional unit/specialty certifications may vary by department or business unit.

  • Good physical assessment skills, triage, and first aid skills.
  • Good patient education skills.
  • Strong communication skills and intermediate computer skills.
  • Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
  • Collects urine toxicology specimens; performs respirator fit testing and normal respirator medical clearances; and alcohol breath testing according to department policy/procedure.
  • Coordinates with nursing staff to schedule associate follow-ups including injury appointments, exposure follow-ups, and other needs.
  • Coordinates with Shared Services for administrative needs at site. Collaborates with other OH staff and SS to create best practices for MedStar OH.
  • Documents observations made, care provided, and laboratory test results in the patient medical record and in the electronic occupational health medical (OHM) record, according to established guidelines.
  • Maintains appropriate supply par levels. Stocks and prepares examination rooms and orders supplies as needed.
  • Maintains organization and efficiency in OH with appropriate scheduling, documentation, paperwork and chart preparation prior to and after clinical evaluation by RN/NP/PA. Processes associates as is relevant to visit.
  • May transport and/or assist patients to/from examinations, other departments, etc.
  • Performs phlebotomy as needed per OH policy for pre-placement candidates, BBP exposures, and other needs as well as UDS collection as needed per collection protocol including proper chain of custody, packaging, and shipping/delivery.
  • Performs screening and client health data and collection by taking a health history and vital signs, including pulse, blood pressure, temperature, height and weight measurements; reviews vaccination status, tuberculosis screening. Assists RN, NP, or PA with examinations and/or procedures, as directed. Prepares and consents to patients prior to treatment.
  • Prepares and administers medications, including vaccinations and tuberculosis skin testing according to department policy/procedure.
  • Provides care for assigned clients under the general direction of a Registered Nurse, Nurse Practitioner, and/or Physicians Assistant in Occupational Health, following the established plan of nursing care in the occupational health setting.
  • Reports observations/changes in patient status to the appropriate medical professional including urgent care requirements and emergencies. Provides assistance during emergencies, including performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and use of Automatic External Defibrillator (AED).
  • Reviews employee health record to determine compliance with required vaccinations, exams, and tuberculosis screening. Plans for completion of compliance requirements with clients. Notifies manager of non-compliance.
  • Participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts. Participates in multi-disciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
