General Summary of Position
Provides hospital with processed materials and equipment ensuring a quality product for patient care by executing established procedures for decontamination, assembly, packaging and sterilization.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
  • Collects soiled/reusable equipment each shift following appropriate transport techniques and handles infectious waste and linen according to established hospital procedure.  Uses proper protective apparel when performing decontamination.
  • Sets up decontamination equipment for operation and ensures proper function and continuous work flow throughout the shift, reporting equipment failure appropriately.
  • Examines surgical instrumentation for cleanliness, proper assembly and performance; Assembles instrument sets, ensuring that the correct number and type of instruments are present and placed appropriately to ensure sterilization and ease of use.
  • Completes count sheets to document the contents of the tray and follows established procedures to package instruments for terminal sterilization.  Stores sterile items in CS storage area, ensuring that items are rotated according to established procedure.
  • Performs testing of all sterilizers to ensure proper function, reviews the testing data, interprets the results, documents results according to established processes, and reports any malfunctions appropriately.
  • Observes and assesses the operation of each sterilizer for every cycle by interpreting the recorder data provided and documents the contents of each load according to established processes.
  • Courteously answers the telephone to take requests for instruments/supplies and promptly responds to ASAP and STAT requests
  • Contacts vendors as needed for loaner instruments, accurately completes paperwork for supply requisitions, and checks loaner instrument trays in and out of the department according to established procedures.

    Minimum Qualifications
    Education

    • High School Diploma or GED required or
    • equivalent required

    Experience

    • Actively enrolled in allied health/votech program and have completed junior year. required

    Licenses and Certifications

    • Sterile Processing certification Certification with a recognized central service association required
