General Summary of Position
Performs a variety of technical duties to assist with surgery. Provides expert services in all surgical specialty areas. Acts as a role model and resource for service excellence.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
  • Actively participates in the interview process of Surgical Technologist applicants. Evaluates skills of the Surgical Technologist applicants (i.e. observing table setup).
  • Acts as a role model for Surgical Technologists I and II. Responsible and accountable for professional conduct, clinical competency and skills.
  • Anticipates sequential needs of the surgeon during the operative procedure.
  • Assists the circulating RN with placement of limb tourniquets, application and removal of casts and splints, application of antiembolism stockings and sequential compression devices, insertion of Foley catheters, surgical preps, collection and identification of specimens, application of ace wraps, knee braces, shoulder immobilizers, slings, cervical collars and abduction devices.
  • Assists with case preparation, following preference card guidelines.
  • Collaborates with Resource Nurse and Perioperative Educator on the development and provision of competency-based orientation for the scrub role in all services. Precepts staff and students on scrub role.
  • Ensures that equipment is functioning properly. Immediately identifies and troubleshoots equipment problems within specialty area and/or notifies appropriate personnel.
  • Functions as surgical assistant during operative procedures performing specified activities under the direct supervision of the surgeon. May act as second assistant by providing exposure and holding retractors.
  • Is called upon as an expert technical resource by OR staff for information relating to care and preparation of surgical instruments and equipment and for sterilization and disinfecting procedures. Assists with planning and maintenance of equipment.
  • Maintains aseptic techniques; actively monitors situations that could lead to breaches in aseptic technique.
  • Participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts as required. Serves as a contributing member on unit-based committees.
  • Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Provides assistant circulator services for major surgical procedures conscious sedation, local and emergency procedures.
  • Provides comfort and support for preoperative patients by demonstrating sensitivity to patient's care and privacy. Performs indirect patient care activities such as patient transportation as needed.
  • Responds to questions from patient, families, and significant others in a prompt, courteous, positive, and knowledgeable manner and/or refers to appropriate personnel.

    Minimum Qualifications
    Education

    • High School Diploma or GED required and
    • Bachelor's degree from a school of surgical technology or hospital-based program required or
    • One year of relevant education may be substituted for one year of required work experience.

    Experience

    • 3-4 years Surgical technologist experience and consideration given to individuals who have exhibited intense exposure to a surgical setting. required
    • One year of relevant professional-level work experience may be substituted for one year of required education.

    Licenses and Certifications

    • CST - Certified Surgical Technologist certification. required and
    • Must maintain 18 Continuing Education Credits per year. required and
    • CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (includes BLS and NRP) for healthcare providers from either the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross within 90 Days required and
    • Additional unit/specialty certifications may vary by department or business unit.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Competency in case procedure, preparation and completion in all services.
    • Expert in all specialty surgical services.
    • Verbal and written communication skills.
    • Basic computer skills preferred.


    This position has a hiring range of $29.15 - $51.68
