JOB SUMMARY

At NorthBay Healthcare the Laboratory Supervisor is a licensed clinical laboratory scientist with demonstrated expertise and supervisory experience in all areas of the clinical laboratory.  This is a working supervisory role that includes twenty percent bench work and is responsible for the technical and direct supervision of all laboratory personnel, quality control and patient results, as well as maintenance of policies and procedures.  The Laboratory Supervisor is a member of the director's management team and is responsible for operational activities during normal business hours for the clinical laboratory.  This role also encompasses the management of human, fiscal, and other resources, development of personnel, compliance with regulatory and professional standards and fosters interdisciplinary collaboration and teamwork.

 PRIMARY JOB DUTIES

  1.  Monitors and ensures that the department meets applicable professional and regulatory standards by reviewing quality control, patient results, temperature/ maintenance graphs, amended and critical values.
  2. Develops schedule ensuring core staff.  Is accountable for staffing needs by maintaining staffing at the budgeted levels by scheduling appropriately or calling off staff by evaluating daily and shift workload.  Insures daily coverage by monitoring the schedule.  Completes the time and attendance system.
  3. Interviews prospective employees, hires appropriate candidates, monitors their orientation, and performs their introductory evaluation.
  4. Assumes the responsibility for the work of employees supervised. Evaluates and documents individual employee performance through the performance appraisal process during the allotted timeframe.
  5. Counsels staff as appropriate.  Conducts the disciplinary process in conjunction with the director and the human resources department.
  6. Completes and submit employee accident reports and provides necessary follow-up.  Is responsible for maintaining employee competency binders.
  7. Demonstrates effective problem solving and conflict resolution skills through resolution of unit and interdepartmental problems at the lowest level. Effectively communicates within and across departments.
  8. Performs educational needs assessment of staff and develops yearly education program for department in collaboration with the director.
  9. Maintains ongoing Quality Improvement activities consistent with the organizational quality and patient safety plans.
  10. Assigns Proficiency Testing to CLSs, enters the results into the on-line website.
  11. Completes corrective action reports on proficiency testing
  12. Reviews and is accountable for assigned policy and procedure updates.
  13. Participates on special projects and interdisciplinary committees as assigned.
  14. Assists the Director in the development and management of the annual personnel, expense and capital budgets.
  15. Maintains clinical laboratory scientist competence by working two assigned days in the staffing rotation.  Works relief in the general lab areas if needed.
  16. Fosters teamwork and positive customer relationships.
  17. Performs other duties as assigned.


Qualifications

JOB SPECIFICATIONS 

 

       Education:  BS Degree and graduation from an approved school of medical technology.

Licensure:  State of California Clinical Laboratory Scientist License.  ASCP or equivalent.

 Experience:  Six years of current laboratory experience in all areas of the laboratory.  Prior supervisory experience at the supervisor level or additional business training.

Skills:  Excellent oral and written communication skills required. Excellent judgment and technical skills.  Ability to supervise laboratory personnel.  Must possess teaching ability, leadership and high professional standards. Must be well organized, be able to set priorities, work independently and is an effective team member.    Word processing, statistical/data management skills required.

Interpersonal Skills: Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills in dealing with co-workers, the public, patients and physicians. Compensation Based on years of experience. $71.78 - $87.27 per hour

Night Differential: $11.20 per hour

Evening Shift $5.58 per hour

Weekend Shift: $1.40 per hour
