Description

The Department of Psychiatry at the Zucker Hillside Hospital (ZHH) of Long Island Jewish Medical Center (LIJ)/Northwell Health is seeking a dynamic, academically oriented, board-certified addiction psychiatrist to serve as both Director for its newly developing Addiction Psychiatry Division and as Program Director of our ACGME-accredited Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship Training Program.

This critical position will oversee a multidisciplinary staff of psychiatrists, psychologists, nurse practitioners and addiction medicine contributors, as well as administrative/clerical personnel who provide services in one of our five (5) New York State Office of Addiction Services and Supports (OASAS)-licensed ambulatory programs located on and off the Long Island Jewish Medical Center campus. In addition, the Division Director will guide and ensure that these programs serve as a critical training platform for psychiatry house officers in our highly regarded ACGME-accredited Psychiatry Residency Training Program; addiction psychiatry fellows; other multi-disciplinary behavioral health trainees; and provide selected experiences for medical students at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell.

Zucker Hillside Hospital's sister Northwell behavioral health facility, South Oaks Hospital (SOH), is located approximately 25 minutes east of the Zucker Hillside campus on the border of Nassau and Suffolk counties in Amityville, NY. SOH houses an OASAS-licensed ambulatory service and inpatient detox and rehabilitation units which represent important elements within Northwell's regional addiction psychiatry continuum. Through interactions with SOH's Medical Director, the Director, Division of Addiction Psychiatry will provide supervisory guidance and programmatic oversight focused on achieving clinical standardization and optimal care quality across Northwell sites.

The successful candidate will also be a key participant in the extensive behavioral health care continuum associated with the Department of Psychiatry, which shares responsibility for clinical programs across Long Island Jewish Medical Center (Zucker Hillside, Cohen Children's and Long Island Jewish hospitals) and North Shore University Hospital. These facilities regularly serve patients with substance use disorders in their medical-surgical inpatient, ambulatory and emergency department settings who benefit from consultatory addictionology expertise and linkage to our OASAS programs. One exciting example is Northwell's emerging Transplant Institute and its liver transplant candidates and patients. As such, the Division Director will regularly interface with leadership colleagues at these institutions.

With a seat on the department's Psychiatric Executive Committee, the Director, Addiction Psychiatry Division will also be a prominent voice influencing decisions about strategic priorities, facilitating access, innovative care models, budgetary allocations, and personnel recruitment/retention.

The Research Division at ZHH and the Institute of Behavioral Sciences at Northwell's Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research have national and international reputations based on seminal contributions in psychopharmacology, genetics, neuroimaging, and psychiatric service delivery. The Addiction Psychiatry Division will interact with funded clinical research programs through subject recruitment and assessment/treatment initiatives that enable opportunities for the Director to participate as a co-investigator on existing projects and/or lead other new studies.

Our long-standing Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship Training Program draws high quality candidates to its two slots, with many graduates recruited into Attending positions across Northwell Health facilities. Home-based on the ZHH campus, fellows rotate through other OASAS sites with additional exposures to methadone maintenance, alcohol and opioid withdrawal patients at LIJMC's medical-surgical units supervised by a double-boarded Consult-Liaison and Pain Management specialist, and inpatient detox and rehab units at regional sister Northwell facilities. Fellows also provide supervised consultation to dual-diagnosis patients in ZHH inpatient units.

Northwell Health is dedicated to addressing the national opioid crisis, especially since geographic areas within Northwell's extended ‘footprint' are considered epidemic epicenters (e.g., Suffolk County, Staten Island). As such, Northwell has established systemwide, multidisciplinary constructs including an Opioid Management Steering Committee with diverse subcommittees. The successful candidate can participate in these and other related initiatives, engendering innovative collaborations with other leaders and departments across the System.

We are seeking applicants with outstanding clinical skills and program leadership experience with commitments to education and trainee supervision and to engaging research. Qualified candidates should forward their CV and a cover letter to Alice Perkins at aperkins2@northwell.edu.

Benefits at Northwell Health include:

  • Nationally competitive salaries
  • Comprehensive benefits package
  • Four weeks' vacation plus paid conference/CME time
  • Academic appointment in the Department of Psychiatry at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell
  • Advanced education opportunities
  • College tuition reimbursement for dependent children
