What you'll do:

This is a management position to oversee all aspects of the Engineered Solutions business unit of Olympus Controls. In this capacity, the Design Engineering Manager will act as a player/coach providing management duties, while also taking on portions of design activities with a hands-on approach to problem solving and working with the team to generate complete solutions for customers.  

This position calls for a well-organized, self-motivated person, who enjoys a variety of concurrent assignments and a high degree of latitude and accountability while working with technology and people. It requires enthusiasm, creativity, flexibility, resiliency, excellent oral and written communication skills, and professional and courteous personality. Additional details about what you will be doing include:

Manager Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Manage the scope, schedule and budget of design projects 
  • Assess the technical and financial feasibility of potential design projects 
  • Working closely with our Sales and Operations teams to deliver world class solutions to our clients 
  • Accountable for the Engineering Team's activities and effectiveness 
  • Serve as a liaison between engineering team members and upper management 
  • Provide leadership and guidance to the Engineered Solutions team 
  • Maintain and adjust the cost quoting process to meet or exceed desired project gross margins.  
  • Establish and maintain efficient workflow and processes across all engineering functions, to operations, quality, and the customer 

Engineering Duties and Responsibilities  

  • Work with Sales Engineers and Customers to define projects specifications, potential solution pathways, timelines, ROI, and project road maps 
  • Prepare Statements of Work (SOW)/proposals for new business opportunities 
  • Implement and teach Design for Manufacturing (DFM) best practices 
  • Apply Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) principles to demonstrate capability and reproducibility in the system output when required 
  • Apply and lead teams in Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) & Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (DFMEA) processes during the design process 
  • Produce detailed mechanical designs and design concepts 
  • Master of root cause analysis principles in troubleshooting automated systems 
  • Work collaboratively with the Engineered Solutions team and Operations to ingest build-to-print projects from customers and/or in-house Prototype Engineers 
  • Implement process controls and efficiency measures 
  • Travel may be necessary from time to time, < 10%

Qualifications/Experience:

  • Engineering degree or higher in a mechatronics discipline (Mechanical, Electrical, Software) 
  • 10+ years of engineering and 2+ years of management experience required
  • Demonstrated success in bespoke design through deployment 
  • Experience in product development (PDP, NPI) strategies i.e. House of Quality, Phase Gate, Sprint etc. 
  • Demonstrated application of Six Sigma process control, LEAN and/or DFSS 
  • Computer literacy and Microsoft Office experience are a must  
  • Experience in PDM (i.e., SolidWorks PDM), ERP (SAP preferred), CAD software systems (SolidWorks is a plus) 
  • Experience with mechatronics (i.e., sensors, vision, motion control, PLC, robotics, safety) 
  • Experience in designing or understanding of automation controls (i.e., electrical schematics, automation control panels, PLC's) 
  • Understanding principles of software code (robot, vision programing) is a plus 
  • Experience reading mechanical and electrical drawings is a must
