Job Summary

Provides transfusion services to meet the needs of patients performed in accordance with FDA regulations and accepted standards and practices of regulatory agencies. Directs and coordinates functions and activities of Blood Bank personnel. Works closely with Blood Bank Technical Supervisor, Medical Directors, and hospital personnel to assure safety of blood products for patients and adherence to current transfusion standards. Accountabilities

* Responsible for supervision and system oversight of Blood Bank operations and personnel performing and reporting testing results. Responsible for assessing the competency of personnel as delegated by the Technical Supervisor. Responsible for oversight of student and new employee training. Responsible for work schedules, personnel assignments; evaluates work performance and initiates or makes recommendations for personnel actions.  25%

* Prepares written documentation as required by regulatory agencies and GHS. Maintains department records, reports, and files as required and assists in preparing reports by compiling information. Assures Blood Utilization reporting is completed. Reports incidents to FDA as required. Assures proficiency testing is completed per standards.  25%

* Consults with medical staff, Prisma Health Laboratory staff, and other health care providers on matters relating to transfusion services. Works collaboratively with multiple hospital departments to provide transfusion services. Implements new procedures or processes within and outside lab as needed.  15%

* Attends meetings as required and participates on committees as directed. Works closely with LIS staff to assist with technical knowledge for computer processes and assign correct billing codes. 15%

* May participate in research activities, and investigates new products, equipment, techniques, methodologies, and introduces, demonstrates, effects, and recommends as is appropriate. Assures new equipment is validated per standards.  5%

* Manages the purchase/requisition of laboratory supplies and equipment.  5%

* Develops and manages budget for the unit/department, including estimates of future personnel and equipment needs. Allocates funds within budget to accomplish objectives and monitors variance against budget on an ongoing basis.  5%

* Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, in-service education, current literature review, professional affiliations and meetings to keep abreast of latest trends in the field of expertise.  5%

Supervisory/Management Responsibilities Job has direct and/or indirect supervision of employees that may include final budget authority, hire/termination/disciplinary authority, performance appraisal responsibility. Job will be considered a member of the management staff with direct reports. Minimum Education

Bachelor's Degree that meets ASCP or AMT requirements

Minimum Experience

5 years' of Clinical Blood Bank experience in hospital or Blood Center

Required Certifications/Registrations/Licenses JOB RELATED CERTIFICATION -

SBB Certification

Certification must be current for one of the following:

MLS (ASCP)

MT (ASCP)

Categorical (ASCP)

MT (AMT)

In lieu of the Above Minimum Requirements

SBB certification within 1 year

Compile statistics, compose correspondence, coordinate events/meetings, enter data into computer programs,          excellent human relations/ interpersonal skills, excellent oral/written communication skills, interview skills - Required
