Summary

The Principal Data Engineer will play a crucial role in expanding and optimizing our data and data pipeline architecture, while also enhancing data flow and collection for cross-functional teams within the Engineering Organization. They will collaborate closely with software engineers and product management teams on data initiatives, ensuring that the optimal data delivery architecture is consistently maintained across ongoing projects.

In this role, you will
  • Serves as a technical expert across all RNDC data technologies and able to provide technical leadership to team members.
  • Understands, articulates, interprets, and applies the principles of the defined strategy to business problems that may span one or many functions or domains.
  • Defines and identifies the most suitable sources for required data that is fit for purpose, referring to external sources as required. 
  • Acts as key technical contact point for all database design decisions within a given project and ensures that appropriate level of architecture reviews is conducted.
  • Advises project teams of standard requirements, security standards, methodology and processes. Reviews the deliverables of data engineers and provides guidance.
  • Assists in defining data modeling standards and foundational best practices. 
  • Acts as SME in the plan and design of new solutions and provides support on all the stages of data implementation and/or related deployments. Evaluates impacts of data issues and risks at an early stage.
  • Influences business stakeholder decision making and challenge business assumptions on topics related to one's domain expertise.
  • Follows best practices in support of large, complex, enterprise projects and can estimate required work effort.
  • Identifies and defines the appropriate techniques for exposing data to other systems.
     
What you bring to RNDC
  • Bachelor's/Tech School degree in Computer Science, MIS or Engineering or relevant technical field and/or commensurate years of real-world experience in software engineering.
  • 10+ years of relevant experience in data management and data engineering with detailed knowledge of data warehouse technical architectures, infrastructure components, ETL/ ELT
  • Technical expertise with data models, data mining, and segmentation techniques
  • Experience in data acquisition, transformation and storage design using design principles, patterns and best practices
  • Experience with performance analysis and optimization
  • Experience with relational SQL and NoSQL databases, including Postgres and Cassandra
  • Experience with data pipeline and workflow management tools
  • Experience with AWS cloud services: EC2, EMR, RDS, Redshift
  • Experience with stream-processing systems: Kafka, Storm, Spark-Streaming, etc.
