Organization Overview

Laboratory Safety and Environmental Health's role at The Rockefeller University is the development and management of the University's environmental health and safety programs. LS&EH works with the University's researchers,other departments on campus,and a wide range of outside regulatory and advisory agencies to ensure that the University is a safe and compliant place to work. In addition to providing support and services to the University,LS&EH conducts research in the health and safety fields. Aimed at minimizing waste,environmental impacts,and laboratory hazards,the staff's research spans the radioactive,biological and chemical aspects of laboratory safety and has resulted in the publication of two books and numerous journal articles.
Overview

Reporting to the Assistant Director, Laboratory Safety & Environmental Health, this position will provide assistance in the management and execution of the University's biosafety program.


Responsibilities

Job responsibilities are:

  • Provide assistance in the management and execution of the University's biosafety program with particular emphasis on research activities involving recombinant DNA molecules, laboratory animals and biohazardous agents.
  • Participation in the laboratory safety audit program, the medical surveillance program, consultation to researchers on biosafety, oversight of the medical waste program, and provision of support to the chemical, radiation, IH, and general industry components of the integrated safety program as appropriate.
  • Manage the biosafety cabinet program which includes maintenance, repair and training.
  • Assist in writing, reviewing and updating biosafety policies and procedures.
  • Maintain a biological materials inventory database for all Laboratories on campus that use biological materials.
  • Perform annual site visits of all laboratories on campus.
  • Prepare monthly and quarterly billing.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience in one or more of the following areas; microbiology, cellular biology, molecular biology, genetics, or biochemistry.
  • Requires a BA/BS degree in any one of the above areas with either relevant professional experience in the field of biosafety, or three or more years of laboratory research experience with recombinant DNA, microbiological practices, and BL2+ (preferred BL3) containment practices.
  • Ability and willingness to wear respiratory protection
  • Advanced word processing and database application skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience in a university setting preferred.

Compensation Range: Min

USD $45,000.00/Yr.
Compensation Range: Max

USD $50,000.00/Yr.
