SAIC is seeking an individual with a Bachelor of Science (BS) or Master of Science (MS) degree in biology, cell biology, or related field. The individual will work under the guidance of US Air Force Research Lab (AFRL) and SAIC scientists on projects investigating the biological effects of laser and directed energy exposure.  This will be a full-time position based at the Air Force Research Laboratory, San Antonio, Texas.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct research work with mammalian cell culture, with tasks including sterile technique, routine cell culture maintenance, making buffers and media, and preparing cultures for experiments.
  • Perform laser experiments and assess for biochemical and cytoskeletal perturbations.
  • Employ relevant instrumentation and methods, such as light/fluorescence/confocal microscopy, Western blot, ELISA, Raman microspectroscopy, FT-IR spectroscopy, and microplate readers.
  • Establish and maintain familiarity with current published literature in the field on laser bioeffects.
  • Provide regular updates to principle investigators on project progress.
  • Document study methods and results in the form of laboratory notebooks, data archives, PowerPoint slides, technical reports, conference proceedings, and peer-reviewed journal articles

Qualifications

Required qualifications:

  • US citizen.
  • Bachelor (BS) or Master (MS) degree in biology, cell biology, or related field.
  • Two (2) or more years of experience in mammalian cell culture.
  • Two (2) or more years of experience in a research laboratory setting.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of good laboratory practices.
  • Experience in recording progress and data in a scientific notebook (provided).

Desired qualifications:

  • Experience with mammalian neural cell cultures.
  • Experience with spectroscopies (Raman, FT-IR, other).
  • Experience with confocal microscopy.
  • Experience with fluorescence staining of cytoskeletal components.
