OverviewThe Vermont Attorney General's Office has an opening for a full-time Division Chief of the Civil Division. DescriptionThe Civil Division Chief manages the day-to-day operations of the Civil Division of the Attorney General's Office. The Division Chief is directly answerable to the Attorney General and reports to the Deputy Attorney General. They are responsible for directing and supervising a total of thirteen personnel and the operational functions of the Division, which involves working closely with the Office of Risk Management within the Agency of Administration. They oversee civil litigation against the State of Vermont and are responsible for providing advice and litigation counsel to the Attorney General and client agencies across state government.
Attorneys in the Civil Division serve as civil trial counsel defending the State's executive officers and agencies, as well as state statutes and rules. The Civil Division handles claims against all branches of government on issues ranging from the Vermont Tort Claims Act, to labor and employment law matters, to constitutional challenges. Attorneys regularly appear in the Civil Division of the Superior Court, the Vermont Supreme Court, and federal court.
This Division Chief position is an exempt full-time position and requires Vermont residency or the ability to commute to Montpelier. The annual salary of the Attorney General's Division Chiefs is currently $146,744.00. Benefits are provided in accordance with those offered to state employees through the Department of Human Resources.
Minimum RequirementsCandidates must be a member in good standing of the Vermont bar, or eligible to waive in.
A minimum of eight or more years of relevant civil litigation experience and some prior management experience are preferred.
Must possess excellent litigation, communication, and negotiation skills, and work well as the manager of a litigation team.
