Overview

The Agency of Transportation is seeking a highly skilled Structural Materials Engineer to join our team. In this role, you will lead the Structural Materials unit within the Materials Testing and Certification section of the Construction and Materials Bureau. The successful candidate will demonstrate advanced engineering expertise, exceptional leadership skills, and a commitment to executing assignments in accordance with state and federal guidelines.


Primary Responsibilities:

  • Supervise the Structural Materials unit to ensure compliance with laws, policies, and procedures.
  • Plan and direct field studies, identify improvement needs, and develop improvement programs.
  • Manage section budgets, set work priorities, and represent the Agency at hearings and public meetings.
  • Maintain the operability and accreditation of testing laboratories, including documentation management.
  • Serve as the liaison for highway construction structural materials, facilitate the introduction of new technologies into projects, and chair the Concrete Technical Committee.
  • Investigate in-service structural materials performance, conduct testing, and provide recommendations.
  • Represent VTrans on regional and national committees, participating in annual meetings and sub-committees.

 

The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related field; Master's degree preferred.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
  • Experience in materials sampling, testing, and certification, with a focus on highway construction structural materials.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and project management skills.
  • Knowledge of state and federal guidelines, AASHTO accreditation requirements, and quality assurance programs.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.

Environmental Factors

Duties are generally performed in both office and field settings for which private means of transportation must be available. Fieldwork may involve exposure to hazardous materials, traffic hazards, and construction sites during all weather conditions and may involve traversing rough terrain and bodies of water. Some work outside of regular working hours, including attendance at public meetings, may be required. Strong differences of opinion may be encountered on a regular basis.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, construction management, architectural engineering, or related technical field AND seven (7) years of engineering experience INCLUDING licensure as a Professional Engineer.
OR
Associates degree civil engineering, construction management, architectural engineering, or related technical field AND ten (10) years of engineering experience INCLUDING licensure as a Professional Engineer.
