Overview

The State of Vermont Department Of Corrections is looking for a Corrections Education Headmaster, to work out of DOC's central offices in Waterbury.  This position directs the education unit of the Risk Intervention Services (RIS) Division of the Vermont Department of Corrections (DOC) and reports directly to the RIS Division Director. As headmaster, you'll manages educational services of adult basic education, General Education Development (GED), secondary education (including special education), and post-secondary partnerships.  You will have direct supervision of six Corrections Education Supervisors stationed at DOC correctional facilities and carry out weekly meetings, observation, and management of specific educational services.

 

Management of 28 Correctional Educator positions stationed at DOC correctional facilities is carried out through the Corrections Education Supervisors. Candidates for this position must have experience and understanding in the multiple pathways of adult education. Oversight of the VDOC education services operating budgets is managed through the VDOC business office. This position is responsible for liaising with multiple in state and out of state education partners, technical assistance organizations, and corrections education organizations. Along with an understanding of educational best practices and standards this position is responsible for understanding best practice in correctional services and program standards.

Environmental Factors

In general, the incumbent will travel extensively to each program site and work from that site. Private means of transportation is necessary for work related travel when a fleet vehicle is unavailable. Incumbent must be able to interact, work, and deal with Department staff, educators, state, federal and local officials, correctional facility clients, and the general public. Evening and weekend work may be required. Meetings and activities take place within correctional facilities and Community Correctional Services Centers.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in education, educational administration, or in adult education.

Note: Must have or be eligible for a Professional Educator's license from the Vermont Standards Board for Professional Educators with an endorsement in one of the following: Adult Services Coordinator, Career and Technical Center Director, Director of Special Education, Principal, or Superintendent.

Candidates must pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position. In accordance with AHS Policy 4.02, Hiring Standards, Vermont and/or national criminal record checks, as well as DMV and adult and child abuse registry checks, as appropriate to the position under recruitment, will be conducted on candidates, with the exception of those who are current classified state employees seeking transfer, promotion or demotion into an AHS classified position or are persons exercising re-employment (RIF) rights.
