Overview

The Agency of Transportation has an exciting opportunity for an independent-thinking Engineering Technician looking to work in the construction field as an Inspector or Chief Inspector providing oversight on highway construction projects. In this position, you will be provided the opportunity to gain the skills necessary to advance into the Resident Engineer role. Construction Inspectors and Resident Engineers are exposed to a wide variety of construction projects ranging from paving, roadway, and bridge construction, to railroad work and even the occasional covered bridge restoration. While gaining valuable experience actively checking and documenting all aspects of transportation projects you will have an opportunity to collaborate with designers, contractors, state and local officials, and subject matter experts from all disciplines of engineering and construction. You will assist in the inspection of a specific project or multiple projects under the direction of a Chief Inspector or Resident Engineer. Or, based on experience, you may be assigned the Chief Inspector for the project(s).

 

The official workstation is Construction Headquarters in Berlin and you may be assigned to work anywhere in the State. The work can be challenging and yet very rewarding with abundant opportunities for professional growth and career advancement.

 

This position is classified as an AOT Technician III by the Department of Human Resources.

Environmental Factors

Duties are generally performed in an office, laboratory, and field setting for which private means of transportation must be available. Fieldwork may involve exposure to hazardous materials, traffic hazards, and construction sites during all weather conditions; and may involve traversing rough terrain and bodies of water. Class incumbents may be required to carry equipment weighing up to 40 pounds, traverse rough, wooded, and steep terrain, travel in boats or work on structures above ground level. Duties may also require exposure to extreme weather conditions. Out of state travel may be required.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in engineering technology, environmental technology, surveying, construction technology, architecture, construction management, or related technical field AND one (1) year of experience performing engineering support tasks involved in one or more of the following: planning, surveying, design, inspection, construction, research and statistics, testing, investigation, maintenance or construction of various types of civil engineering projects.

OR

Associate degree in civil engineering, environmental technology, engineering technology, surveying, construction technology, architecture, or related field AND three (3) years of experience as described above.

OR

High school graduation or equivalent AND five (5) years of experience as described above.

OR

One (1) year as an AOT Technician II with the State of Vermont.

Special Requirements

Some positions in this job class may require possession of a valid driver's license.
