Position Overview:
The Bravehearts will create a new and innovative peer led youth movement located at the Bridge Builders Family Enrichment Center in the Bronx NY. This program for young adults ages 12-24, seeks to provide support, empowerment and youth leadership through the lens of lived experience for youth who have been impacted by youth serving systems. While using a group and individualized empowerment model, participants will be provided meaningful opportunities to advocate for themselves, their peers and ultimately, for the improvement of services by utilizing youth voice as a form of expertise. The Peer Navigator will provide support services to youth within the target geographic population. The Braveheart Peer Navigator will use both personal lived and learned experience to nurture, develop and facilitate the activities and discussions of the Bravehearts movement both administratively and programmatically.
In addition, this position will require the ability to coordinate weekly schedules to attend individual mentoring sessions with youth participants as required. The Peer Navigator will help support the inclusion of authentic youth voice and provide mentoring support to youth to help address their individual needs, concerns and goals.
Position Qualifications:
• Candidate must have a GED or high school diploma and have personal experience with the child welfare, juvenile justice and/or mental health system in the areas of navigating the educational, employment, wellbeing and housing systems and resources.
• Valid NYS Driver's license preferred.
• Must have basic understanding and computer literacy skills with Microsoft office such as Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
• Must have basic organizational skills and strong oral communication skills.
• Must have experience and ability to navigate the public transportation system.
• Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of culture, race and issues facing adolescents of color.
• Must embody a strong understanding of youth movements and the impact of youth voice.
• Demonstrate ability to effectively use a multi-cultural approach in working with special needs youth.
• Strong ability to work as a team member and independently, as well as actively participate in supervision.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with youth and staff, as well as ability to partner with professionals.
• Willingness to speak publicly and participate in trainings.
• Ability to maintain communication logs.
