Summary of Job Duties: The primary duty of the APP is to care for observation patients admitted from the Emergency Department (ED) to the Clinical Decision Unit (CDU). These patients are admitted under fairly restrictive protocols and are expected to be treated and discharged within 24 hours of admission. Duties also include caring for undifferentiated patients in the Emergency Department setting.

The CDU operates 24/7/365 as a flexible arm of the UAMS Emergency Medicine Service Line, providing efficient and effective care for the community. 
Qualifications:

APRN Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in nursing

  • Minimum of two (2) years of APP experience in an acute care setting OR recently licensed APP with five (5) years of experience in an acute care setting as an RN.

  • Prescriptive authority and DEA license must be obtained after hire.

Physician Assistant Minimum Qualifications:

  • Physician Assistant License

  • Prescriptive authority and DEA license must be obtained after hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Acute care certification

Special knowledge, abilities and skills:

  • Must be able to operate all typical nursing equipment essential to performing the job (i.e., scales, procedure equipment, needles, blood pressure equipment, and EKG machines). 

  • Must have normal communication sensory requirement.

  • Ability to comply with CDC Universal Precautions when indicated. 


Additional Information:

Responsibilities:

  • Cares for observation patients admitted from the ED to the CDU. These patients are admitted under restrictive protocols and are expected to be treated and discharged with 24 hours of admission.

  • Documents on the patient (H and P, progress notes, discharge summaries) and determs a plan of care in conjunction with the admitting physician and informed by evidence-based protocolized care plans. While there is continuous in-house physician support, most of the patient care will be provided by the APP.

  • Works SURGE and PIT shifts in the ED, taking care of undifferentiated patients in an outpatient setting under the direct supervision of attending physicians. 

  • Extends the patient care services of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences physicians.  

  • Provides comprehensive health assessments, determine diagnoses, implement treatment plans, prescribe medical treatments and manage health issues for patients in collaboration with the designated physician(s).  

  • Works autonomously, as well as, in collaboration with a variety of individuals to diagnose and manage patients' health care problems; and will serve as a health care resource, interdisciplinary consultant, and patient advocate.  

  • Coordinates the multidisciplinary care of patients, facilitating all necessary consults, assuring that care is timely and appropriate.  

  • Other duties may be assigned to this position.
