Summary of Job Duties: *This position is exposed to laboratory animals*
Under the direction of the Lab Supervisor, The Research Assistant provides support for research projects in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology. The Research Assistant will perform general and specific laboratory tasks, including cleaning and sterilization of glassware, general laboratory cleaning and supply ordering, preparation of chemical solutions, light maintenance of lab equipment (including water baths, incubators, etc.), basic molecular biology, aseptic tissue culture, capable of handling mouse and rabbit, maintenance of chemical inventories, and data entry. The Research Assistant will perform experiments related to distinct projects in the lab that support trainee success. This position requires 100% time and effort toward research grants supervised by Dr. Jia Liu.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree plus three (3) years of research laboratory experience required.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Must be able to work closely with various laboratory animal specimens.
Must have strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Must be proficient in routine Microsoft Office products.
Must have a basic knowledge of equipment used in a research laboratory.
Must be capable of making chemical reagents.
Ability to keep organized records and notes needed.
Prior experience in molecular biology, and aseptic tissue culture.
Be able to move and clean pieces of laboratory equipment and needs to be reasonably active and able to be on their feet approximately 20% of the day.
Preferred Qualifications:
Training in Cell Biology or Immunology.
Experience working in a research laboratory-related molecular biology or cell biology and proficiency in working with mice or rabbits.
Prior experience working with PCR, Western Blot, ELISA.
Additional Information:
Responsibilities:
Work closely with the Lab Supervisor, Lab students, or post-docs to support their research activities.
Perform or assist with experiments that provide direct data contribution to ongoing research efforts.
Order laboratory supplies, and clean and sterilize glassware.
Perform general cleaning and restocking of the laboratory.
Perform light maintenance of laboratory equipment (water baths, biological safety cabinets, fume hoods, microscope, etc.).
Oversee shipments to and from the lab and aid with the preparation of lab safety protocols.
Processing human lung cell tissue cells.
May perform other duties as assigned.
