Join a world-class academic healthcare system, UChicago Medicine, as a Cytotechnologist in the Anatomic Pathology Lab. In this role as a Cytotechnologist, you will conduct microscopic examination of non-gynecologic and gynecologic specimens and record finding in LIS computer system.  This position may assists with specimen adequacy assessment during ROSE procedures.  Records required data on daily screening and participates in quality control assessments.  Cytotechnologist work collaboratively with colleagues, participates in process improvement projects, and trains Cytotechnology students.

 

Job Summary

 

In consultation with the Anatomical Pathology Manager, pathologists and Medical Directors, the Cytotechnologist is responsible for screening and diagnosing gynecological and non-gynecological slides. Activities include accessioning, staining, assisting in Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) for on-site adequacy evaluation of FNA procedures, and reporting results according to established procedures. In addition, participates in all cytology quality control procedures and complies with quality assurance and quality management standards within the department as outlined by the department and applicable regulatory agencies.

 

Essential Job Functions

 

• Microscopically examine gynecologic, non-gynecologic and FNA samples, identify and mark cells of significance • Enter interpretations into the laboratory information system, appropriately triage cases requiring further evaluation either by a QC technologist or pathologist, and issue a report for Pap tests that do not require further review • Assist cytopathologists with FNA procedures including but not limited to: completing relevant forms, preparing and staining smears, and accessioning. • Operate, troubleshoot, and maintain equipment needed to perform relevant tasks including but not limited to the microscope and cytopreparation equipment • Maintains quality control and conforms to laboratory safety standards • Assists with review and documentation of cases for quality assurance program  • Assists with policy and procedure manual updates • Provides patient-focused care in a clinical setting through the accurate performance of routine and complex tests through the pre-analytic, analytic and post-analytic stages. • Answers inquiries regarding specimen handling, results and other technical information.   • Appropriately assists clinicians with requests and seeks out resources necessary when information is not available to answer questions. • Perform cytopreparation duties as needed  • Assures optimum specimen integrity and positive identification during pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical processes. • Helps to ensures appropriate stock level of supplies. • Assist laboratory staff in the proficient and safe use of equipment in accordance with departmental policies and procedures (including but not limited to FNA service, screening, and technical processing).  • Assists with management of archived case materials, when necessary • Maintains individual workload logs accordance with the CAP and CLIA'88 guidelines for internal and external inspections  • Participate in ongoing continuing education and required annual proficiency testing.

 

Required Qualifications

 

• Bachelor's degree in cytotechnology, cytology, or related health care science field from an accredited college or university.   • Graduation from an accredited school of cytotechnology. 

• Certification as Cytotechnologist (CT) or Specialist in Cytotechnology (SCT) through the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or equivalent

• Knowledge and proficiency in the use of word processing, spreadsheet, and graphical computer programs, automated and conventional cytopathology systems and conventional laboratory equipment.   • Ability to use and understand basic statistical concepts and methods that are commonly utilized in clinical laboratory science.  • Visual acuity; Good manual dexterity and fine motor skills.     Preferred Qualifications   • At least 3 years of Cytology experience
