Join us At the Forefront, at UChicago Medicine, as a Histology Assistant in the Histology Lab. In this role as a Histology Assistant, you will provide assistance in a variety of activities in support of basic anatomic pathology laboratory operations. Primary responsibilities include processing surgical tissues for review by pathologist on hospital, outpatient clinics and outside clients. The Histology lab is known for the internationally recognized pathology faculty at the University of Chicago. They provide world class consultative services by delivering timely, precise, and insightful results in a collegial and supportive manner. Our faculty are experts in the study and diagnosis of disease. With a wide array of specialists, we lead the investigation, identification, and understanding of disease, providing physicians with critical information to treat and manage the patient condition.

 

Job Summary

 

In consultation with the Laboratory Supervisor and Chief Test Dev Histotech is responsible for providing histology laboratory assistance from transport of blocks and specimens from other areas, through all aspects of processing, to case assembly/release, to filing of materials (blocks and slides).

 

Essential Job Functions 

 

• Coordinate activities at the front desk; organize paperwork, answer phone calls, direct inquiries to appropriate staff, etc. • Case assembly; matching slides with paperwork and with the block, releasing the case as “complete” in LIS systems, and delivering product to the correct pathologist, fellow, resident or sub-specialty box. • Filing blocks and slides into all areas of the archive. • Transportation of cassettes, specimens, etc. to and from other laboratories to Histology. • Daily maintenance of tissue processors, stainers, paraffin dispensers, embedding stations.  • Ensures completion of quality control, maintenance, and quality assurance documentation.  • Participates in review of laboratory policies and procedures, training and competency activities, and proficiency testing program. • Maintains section's inventory. • Assists in training of peers/new hires in the proficient and safe use of equipment in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.  • Participates in peer interviews of other histology assistants.

• Perform testing as necessary (for example, embedding, microtomy, and staining).

 

Required Qualifications 

 

• Knowledge and ability to use automated and conventional laboratory instrumentation.  • Knowledge and proficiency in the use of word processing, spreadsheet, and laboratory/hospital information systems. Proven ability to use computers for data entry, retrieval, and statistical analysis.  • Ability to handle large volumes of work within narrow timeframes, outstanding organizational ability and attention to detail.  • Visual acuity; Good manual dexterity and fine motor skills and ability to maneuver/lift bulky containers. • Ability to interact in a professional manner with individuals at all levels. • Ability to maintain composure in stressful situations.

 

Preferred Qualifications

 

• Associates degree in clinical laboratory science, life sciences, or related field from an accredited college or university.

• Training or experience in clinical laboratory or Histology.
