Join UChicago Medicine, as a Special Procedures Nurse in the Procedural and Perioperative Float Pool. 

 

 

As a Special Procedures Nurse, and under the direction of an Attending Physician or a licensed independent practitioner, you will provide technically complex and high risk nursing care services to patients which may include one or more of the following categories: sedation, intravenous infusions, complex procedures, e.g., lumbar puncture, cardiac catheterization.This role may also include specialized monitoring during the procedure and recovery phases. You may have Charge Nurse responsibility for your assigned unit. 

 

This unit is known for supporting many different departments including GI Procedures, Interventional Radiology, Cath Lab and the Electrophysiology department.The support from this unit will allow coverage for all departments and ensure all patients receive the best care.

Essential Job Functions

  • Represents The University of Chicago Medical Center (UCMC) in a positive manner with the prospective, former and current community we serve; interacts effectively with a diverse group of faculty, staff, and other customers of our services; demonstrates knowledge of the operating practices of UCMC.
  • Handles confidential information consistent with Federal HIPAA legislation.
  • Performs a variety of clinical and research procedures with efficiency and high standards of quality; assures that the proper protocol is used for each sedation.
  • Accurately completes required patient assessment, documentation, and interpretations for each patient encounter.
  • Maintains nursing equipment and work areas in proper working condition; reports malfunctioning equipment or housekeeping issues to the appropriate person.
  • The RN is expert in assessing and treating and evaluating patient conditions specific to their work area, e.g., anxiety, pain, claustrophobia and underlying disease conditions. Due to the complex nature of pain, RN will evaluate and treat pain in a prompt, caring fashion and reassess after each intervention, charting per UCMC protocol.
  • RN maintains hospital required nursing & ICU unit specific competencies needed to provide proficient nursing care; RN will provide continuity of care for infant, pediatric or adult patients based on area of specialty.  This includes assisting in the care of critically ill patients during sedation/procedural encounters.
  • Under the Physician direction, the RN administers minimal / moderate sedation analgesia providing patients the ability to tolerate unpleasant procedures while maintaining adequate cardiorespiratory function, protective reflexes, and the ability to respond purposefully to verbal and /or tactile stimulation
  • The RN must have the ability to analyze patient data obtained during sedation to identify risks and/or complications throughout a procedure.

 Required Qualifications

  • RN Required
  • Associate Degree in Nursing; BSN degree or higher preferred.
    • Associate Degree Nurses are required to enroll in a BSN program within six (6) to nine (9) months of hire, and make progress toward and complete their BSN degree within 30 months. ADN nurses receive 100% tuition reimbursement towards a BSN degree from an accredited program.
  • Currently licensed as a registered professional nurse in the State of Illinois

Preferred Qualification

  • Experience working in a research environment.
  • One additional certification in area specialty
  • Current CPR and ACLS
  • 2 years of experience in ICU experience
  • BLS/ACLS/PALS certification within 6 months
