Job Description

Under close supervision, perform semi-skilled agricultural tasks in and around research plots in fields, orchards, nurseries, greenhouses and vineyards.

This position is a Per Diem appointment that is 50% Variable.

Pay Scale: $19.47/hour to $20.16/hour

Key Responsibilities:

90%

Assist with Cultural Practices

- Hand weed, hand thin, hoe, prune, hand harvest, irrigate, and plant-Gather plant material for data collection

- Install irrigation pipe within fields-Clean ditches, mow lawns, trim hedges, sweep sidewalks

- Assist with data collection for research projects

- Train, stake, and tie trees and vines

Other Duties

- Perform other basic tasks associated with a research farm

- Clean up after events, repair and maintenance activities

 

Requirements:

  • Skills in planting, irrigating, weeding, hoeing, pruning, hand harvesting, and fruit thinning in fruit trees and vineyards.
  • Skills to operate vehicles and small tractors.
  • Skills to operate non-powered hand tools such as saws, shears, clippers, hammer, post hold diggers, shovel, and hoe.
  • Ability to independently distinguish weeds from crop.
  • Ability to follow precise directions and learn basic farm labor skills.
  • Language skills to communicate and cooperate with others.
  • Skill to operate simple power tools and standard type lawn mowers.

Preferred Skills:

  • Skill to communicate in English.

Special Conditions of Employment:

  • Overtime / Shift Work: Work schedule and task assignments may change with 4-24 hours' notice or less. Work hours to meet business needs including weekends and holidays.
  • Must possess valid California Driver's License to drive a County or University vehicle. Ability and means to travel on a flexible schedule as needed, proof of liability damage insurance on vehicle used is required. Reimbursement of job-related travel will be reimbursed according to University policies.
  • The University reserves the right to make employment contingent upon successful completion of the background check. This is a designated position requiring a background check and may require fingerprinting due to the nature of the job responsibilities. UC ANR does hire people with conviction histories and reviews information received in the context of the job responsibilities.
  • As of January 1, 2014, ANR is a smoke- and tobacco-free environment in which smoking, the use of smokeless tobacco products, and the use of unregulated nicotine products (e-cigarettes), is strictly prohibited.
