Job Summary

Under the direction of the Small Animal Surgical Services/OR Supervisor and the Neurology/Neurosurgery Service Chief, facilitate the scheduling of Neurology patients and manage patient care and client communication. This role is responsible for ensuring patient care standards for hospitalized patients, preparing patients for surgery, circulating in the operating room, and providing anesthesia support, including induction, monitoring, and post-surgical recovery of patients. Additional, responsibilities include student instruction as well as client communication and education, including patient admissions and discharges. Work cooperatively with others to foster strong team commitments towards achieving Surgery services objectives.

 

Applicants will be screened on a weekly basis. The position can be filled prior to the removal date.

This position may be eligible for a hiring bonus.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Maneuver/lift equipment and materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Handle animals weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Contact with animals, including restraint of animals (sometimes fractious) as required.
  • May be required to wear protective clothing for extended periods of time including: gown, coveralls, gloves, masks, face shields, goggles, sleeves and head covers.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Work occasional overtime; work schedule subject to change with prior notification.
  • Work under Medical Surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy.
  • Work under regular exposure to zoonotic diseases, anesthesia, cleaning chemicals and exposure to radioactive patients.
  • Requires working with or around areas with sick animals, hazardous materials, and/or infectious diseases, and distraught clients.
  • Work in high traffic areas, confined or small spaces, noisy environment and tolerate unpleasant odors.
  • Fluctuating meal periods; work schedule may not allow a set meal period time each day.
  • No eating or drinking in surgery, treatment, procedure and other rooms or areas of the hospital.
  • Work in other related areas on an as needed basis.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Minimum License/Certification:

 

  • Must possess a California Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) license or hold a current license in another state and obtain a CA RVT license within 3 months from the date of hire.

 

Minimum Education/Experience:

 

  • Experience to independently provide treatment of patients whose conditions are likely to change on a moment to moment basis.

 

  • Experience working in a veterinary hospital performing physical examinations and safe handling of multiple species.

 

  • Experience calculating drug dosages and administering medications intravenously, subcutaneously, intramuscular or orally.

 

  • Experience performing venipuncture, placing vascular catheters inducing anesthesia, monitoring anesthesia, and recovering patients from anesthesia, working independently with and without direct supervision.

 

  • Experience prioritizing and organizing workload without direct supervision.

 

 

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

 

  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills to engage effectively with diverse students, staff, clinicians, and clients and the skill to recognize and manage difficult situations.

 

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Education/Experience:   

 

  • Experience in aseptic technique and circulation in an OR.

 

  • Experience in a clinical hospital setting with various species performing sedation and anesthesia.

 

 

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

 

  • Ability to recognize peri-anesthetic problems and patient concerns and to effectively communicate problems or concerns to the supervising veterinarian in a timely manner

 

  • Knowledge of normal laboratory values for cats and dogs.
