Departmental Overview

University Development and Alumni Relations (UDAR), increases support for and enhances knowledge of UC Berkeley through communications, public outreach, and fundraising. UDAR is responsible for fundraising and donor engagement, and works to strengthen unit development offices by consulting and partnering with campus fundraisers. UDAR also handles a range of central activities and services encompassing events, communications, stewardship, prospect development, gift management, database management, and more. 

Student Experience & Diversity (SED) 

The Student Experience & Diversity (SED) Philanthropy program, situated within UDAR, builds innovative philanthropic partnerships to ensure that belonging, discovery, and financial access are integral to every Berkeley student's education. The SED program primarily raises major gifts in support of student aid, co-curricular activities, and equity and inclusion. The team interfaces with a broad range of divisions and academic units on campus, and serves as the primary fundraising entity for the divisions of Equity & Inclusion, Student Affairs and Undergraduate Education.

Position Overview

The Assistant Director serves as an experienced professional and key partner to the SED Executive Director (ED), Deputy Director (DD), development officers, and program leaders, in planning and execution of fundraising strategies for cultivation, proposal development, solicitation, and stewardship of major gift prospects. Exercising in-depth understanding of the fundraising field, this position will develop, write, and implement various highquality, multimedia, custom fundraising materials for advancing giving relationships with prospects/donors to help meet to meet SED's annual fundraising goal of $50M+.

This position uses skills as an experienced fundraising professional. Plans, schedules, and implements comprehensive fundraising projects and programs, including creation and coordination of materials for donor solicitation, leadership briefings, stewardship reports, and donor engagement activities. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. This position will be a strategic thought partner in advancing SED fundraising plans and working collaboratively on SED fundraising projects, and is expected to raise $500K+ once established.

Responsibilities

Prospect Advancement 

  • Under the supervision of the Associate Director, Advancement and Stewardship, the Assistant Director serves as a key partner to the SED Executive Director (ED), Deputy Director (DD), development officers, and program leaders, in planning and execution of fundraising strategies for cultivation, proposal development, solicitation, and stewardship of major gift prospects to meet SED's annual fundraising goal of $50M+ . 
  • Facilitate the donor solicitation process by developing, writing and implementing various high-quality, multimedia, custom fundraising materials for advancing giving relationships with prospects/donors. These include fundraising proposals, briefings for donor prospect meetings, talking points, budgets, stewardship materials, presentations, and correspondence on behalf of campus leaders including but not limited to the Vice Chancellors/Vice Provost for Equity and Inclusion, Student Affairs, and Undergraduate Education.
  • Analyze and synthesize knowledge on donors and SED priorities/initiatives, attending closely to donors' giving interests and perspectives. In partnership with the Prospect Analyst, conduct informal donor prospect research; summarize and prepare background information, including fundraising summary of donor giving histories, with attentiveness to how donors view the story of their own philanthropy. Produce historical account of all donor interaction, including correspondence and visits to accurately create donor records in the campus Advancement database (CADS) and in digital files. 
  • Works to seamlessly connect SED with UDAR fundraising partners including Principal Gifts/Strategic Initiatives, Major Gifts, Foundation Relations & Corporate Philanthropy, Office of Gift Planning, Donor Recognition, Fund Management (Stewardship group), and Prospect Development on fundraising, solicitation, and donor stewardship strategies.

Donor Stewardship

  • Collaboratively supports SED's annual stewardship program from a donor-centric perspective, working closely with the SED fundraising team and UDAR fundraising partners. Provides thought-partnership with SED primary fundraising managers (PM) to collaborate on meaningful donor stewardship touchpoints, including writing reports, student stories, and impact narratives. 
  • Collaboratively executes prospect/donor visits and intimate fundraising events that advance SED large-scale fundraising initiatives and major donor prospect engagement. Plan programming in consultation with ED and DD in addition to gift officers and program leadership. 
  • Raises $5M+ annually for SED priority fundraising areas (i.e. Latinx Thriving, Berkeley Connect, etc.), by being a strategic thought-partner in advancing SED fundraising plans; works collaboratively on SED fundraising leads/projects.
  • Engage with prospects/donors in person, virtually, and/or through written communication as determined necessary by the SED fundraising projects/programs.

Project Management 

  • Creates and writes fundraising program materials such as slide decks, fundraising reports, and presentation development. Works with ED and DD to prepare for and debrief fundraising strategy meetings and actions on fundraising priorities in collaboration with SED's Prospect Analyst.
  • Tracks and prepares SED top prospect/donor activity overview for review at SED team meeting, fundraising strategy meetings, and prospect development partner meetings. 
  • Meets regularly with the SED team to ensure successful coordination of team work flows and project management. 
  • Participates in standing meetings with Donor Recognition, Fund Stewardship & Compliance, and primary fundraising managers regarding strategy and proposal tracking.

Reporting & Data 

  • Produces and designs synthesized reports and debriefs on SED fundraising priorities, as a central resource for SED team, UDAR and campus fundraisers. 
  • Culling from various resources, collects and prepares student impact data for translating to various mediums and audiences. 
  • Assists with writing and editing fundraising cases for support and other fundraising materials.

Required Qualifications
  • Minimum two years of experience in Advancement applying strong analytical and critical thinking skills pertaining to strategic donor engagement. 
  • Demonstrates strong, growth mindset and flexibility to work as a member of a highperforming, highly collaborative fundraising team of development professionals. 
  • Excellent writing and research skills, including ability to make complex information clear and accessible for multiple audiences and shape it for specific purposes; logical and readable organization; proficiency with grammar, syntax, style and punctuation. 
  • Excellent organizational skills; attention to detail and follow-through. 
  • Strong oral and interpersonal communications skills, including political acumen and active listening, to build and maintain effective working relationships at all organizational levels within UDAR and across the campus. 
  • Strong commitment and ability to contribute to a diverse, inclusive, and equitable workplace and team culture. 
  • Excellent professional integrity, tact, discretion, and sound judgment, including in handling confidential information. 
  • Ability to independently solve problems, set priorities among multiple tasks, work efficiently, meet deadlines, and achieve goals. 
  • Knowledge of fundraising and donor relations concepts, principles, and practices. 
  • Knowledge of/experience with conducting research and analysis through databases/online information systems. 
  • Proficiency with Google suite and MS Office suite.

Education and Training

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. 

The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $90,000 to $105,000, commensurate with experience.

  • This is an exempt, monthly paid position, eligible for UC benefits.

Other Information
  • This is a Bay Area-based position. 
  • This is a hybrid position, eligible for 65% remote capability. Schedule to be determined and will vary based on the needs of the department. This role will be expected to attend some in-person meetings on campus, including donor meetings, team meetings, divisional and university gatherings, as well as off-site donor meetings.
  • This is not a visa opportunity.
