Full Hourly Range: Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience; the budget for the position; and the application of fair, equitable, and consistent pay practices at the University. The full hourly range for this position is $28.04 - $45.11/hr. The budgeted hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $28.04 - $29.77/hr.

Work Location: Psychology East - 0804

Working Days and Hours: M-F; variable hours within 8am - 5pm, with occasional evenings.

Brief Summary of Job Duties

Under the general supervision of the Director of the Brain Imaging Center, supports funded research for brain image scanning in the UCSB Brain Imaging Center (BIC) which uses Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) technology on human participants. Responsibilities include all aspects of on-site scheduling studies and coordinating center activities, critical safety training to lab users and ensurance of compliance for all research protocols. Coordinates all lab, department, campus and EH&S safety policies and practices. Utilizes knowledge of the experiments being conducted and experimental protocols, analyzes and makes determinations about the safety and appropriateness of human subjects and their participation in various experiments and identifies the potential for adverse reactions and risk to human subjects in each case. There are significant negative consequences to human participants and the research being conducted if mistakes are made in this position.

Other duties include ordering research related supplies and completing compliance paperwork and billing for fMRI recharges. Secondary duties include human subject recruitment, in-depth screening, analysis and selection, and oversight of human subject research participants for various experiments using fMRI studies and EEG. Facilitates the set-up, running, trouble-shooting, and data collection for various experiments conducted by grad students, faculty and other researchers in department and from across campus.

Required Qualifications

  • Must be sensitive regarding confidential information and exercise good judgment regarding such information.
  • Must be professional, service-oriented, and be able to work with a variety of customers in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience conducting or supporting laboratory research.
  • Experience with data collection.
  • BS/BA degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Job Functions and Percentages of Time:

75% BIC Administration and Oversight - Coordinates with internal UCSB labs and PI's, as well as external non-UCSB research organizations including all Center scheduling. Provides guidance in completion of BIC paperwork and supplementary materials. Ensures appropriate recharge accounts are provided for BIC billing. Generates invoices and charges accounts provided using UCSB recharge/financial journal system. Submits completed recharge/financial journals  to the PBS Business Officer on a monthly basis for processing recharges. Maintains basic record keeping systems and files for the BIC. Prepares monthly financial statement for BIC Director. Assists in preparation of reports and coordinates conferences and administrative meetings. Monitors and updates content of the BIC website including updating annual recharge rates. Orders research-related supplies as needed.

25% BIC Research Support -Responsible for recruitment of research participants for UCSB Brain Imaging Center (BIC) equipped with a Siemens Prisma Fit MRI. Conducts a variety of specialized pre-screening tests of human research subjects covering information such as IQ, mood, personality, sleep, drug use, and medical history. Analyzes screening tests and makes recommendations for participation based on initial determinations about the safety and appropriateness of human subject participation in various types of experiments. Identifies the potential for risk in each case. Decisions can significantly affect the safety and health of research participants. Manages the final scheduling of human subjects. Prepares human subjects for experiments, including the complicated placement of EEG caps and critical positioning of subjects in a high-field, high-risk MRI. Facilitates the set-up and running of experiments in the BIC by various campus faculty, researchers, graduate students and external users. Provides all users with direction, guidance, and continuity and standardization of practices in the BIC. Coordinates simultaneous EEG and fMRI scanning and troubleshoots any issues or problems that arise. Oversees the computerized collection of data and analyzes the information to assure that set-up was successful and data collected meets the requirements for studies. Assists researchers with configuration of eye-tracking measurements during eye-tracking experiments in MRI environment. Makes adjustments and calibrations as necessary. Assists with development of research protocols for submission to Office of Research for review and approval by Human Subjects Committee. Ensures appropriate protocols are in place for all experiments conducted. Provides Tier 1 safety training to scanner users and assists MRI technician as necessary. There are significant negative consequences to human participants and the research being conducted if mistakes are made in this position.
