Full Salary Range: Salary offers are based on final candidate qualifications and experience; the budget for the position; and the application of fair, equitable and consistent pay practices at the University.  The full range for this position is $91,300/yr. to $170,700/yr. The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $112,000/yr. to $117,000/yr.

Departmental Overview

The mission of all Design, Facilities & Safety Services units is to design, build, operate, maintain, and renew the physical environment required to support the University's instructional, research, and public service mission and to assure UCSB is at the forefront of world class universities.

Brief Summary of Duties

Responsible for conception and creation of complex programming capable of automating large scale and critical systems such as the Campus Chilled Water Loop and Animal Resource Center, as well as laboratories and clean rooms. Supports the Capital Building Program, reviews, makes corrections and provides recommendations to Design and Construction Services for all building automation and control systems. Monitors and maintains the campus wide Energy Management System to ensure the system's daily operation and reliability allows technicians and customers to ascertain the status of building equipment. Creates custom interfaces and provides secure access to researchers, Building MSO's and Department Chairs for critical system or building environment real-time conditions. Evaluates current system hardware and software to ensure the system is up-to-date with all security functions and to ensure all field components are reliable and reporting back to the Energy

Management System. Verifies correct operation of all work contracted out for Building Automation or Energy Management projects. In partnership with other UC departments, provides leadership in collecting and compiling campus energy and emission data for annual reporting. Serves as Project Manager for all UCSB Energy Management related construction or Control System projects.

Required Qualifications 

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, building systems, or related field and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • 2-4 years experience designing, programming, implementing, and maintaining building automation and HVAC control systems.

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Proficiency in programming and configuring building automation systems using relevant protocols (e.g., BACnet, Modbus) and software tools.
  • Experience troubleshooting and diagnosing issues related to building automation systems and HVAC controls.
  • Strong communication skills to collaborate with diverse team members, campus partners, and external vendors.
  • Advanced knowledge of building automation and HVAC control systems and demonstrated ability to implement advanced programming solutions for critical campus systems and facilities.
  • Analytical proficiency for HVAC and energy systems necessary for evaluating the performance of system hardware and software in building automation. This includes ensuring the security features are up-to-date and assessing the reliability of components specific to University facilities.
  • Advanced knowledge of building energy efficiency measures and Energy Management Information Systems.
  • Strong verbal and written communication necessary for liaising with Design and Construction Services, creating user interfaces tailored to university researchers, and granting secure access to stakeholders such as building MSOs, Department Chairs, and faculty members.
  • Advanced understanding of construction process and interpretation of plans and specifications applicable to university facilities.
  • In-depth knowledge of university-specific facility management and operations, fire safety, cybersecurity protocols, and emergency preparedness.
  • Ability to collaborate and engage with university departments and stakeholders in alignment with the interdisciplinary nature of a university environment.

Responsibilities

70% Energy & Control Engineering- Serves as a representative for all issues related to Building Automation and Control Systems: Responsible for conception and creation of complex programming capable of automating large scale and critical systems such as the Campus Chilled Water Loop, Animal Resource Center, Seawater Filtration System, as well as laboratories and clean rooms.

Responsible for daily operation and maintenance of the Campus Energy Management and Control System Hardware and Software Components, including an expanding network of over 115 Supervisory Level Engines, Thousands of Field Level Controllers, as well as 250,000 field sensors, components, and software points. Serves as University Representative for commissioning testing and system acceptance on all retro-fitted and newly installed building control systems. Supports commissioning services for all new and existing building control systems for Design and Construction Services and Facilities Management.

Provides direction and suggestions when coordinating with DC&S Project Managers and outside consultants to assure that proper control design is incorporated into construction projects during design development, construction and post occupancy phases.

Develops and creates custom interfaces for Researchers, Building MSO's and Department Chairs in support of academic research requirements for their respective lab and building spaces.

Researches new Controls/Automation Technologies including software, hardware, controlled devices and sensors, in order to be able to assess cost impacts, longevity of the system, and upgrade ability. Makes recommendations to senior management, design teams and project managers for all Building Automation Projects. Researches, develops and writes new department policy covering the requirements for commissioning new and existing building control systems. 

Coordinates with contractors to inspect control system design and makes suggestions and corrections when needed as well as evaluates newly constructed systems to ensure all documentation, new software revisions, graphics, databases and as-built drawings are complete and code compliant.

Works with Facilities Management Information Technology Unit to design and maintain the campus control network infrastructure consisting of over 120 Ethernet Devices, 2 servers, and several Front End Workstations.

Develops and implements a maintenance program and schedule that assures the proper operation of all campus Digital Control Hardware, Software and Databases.

25% Campus Support- Provides leadership and technical support to campus departments concerning the monitoring and modification of building automation and control systems.

Assists FM Trades in troubleshooting, identifying and correcting building system operational issues. Develops and provides training to FM Trades in basic navigation of our Campus Energy Management System as well as the monitoring and operation of our most critical and complex control systems.

Oversees, programs, modifies and implements campus Demand Response Program and coordinates with Southern California Edison and ENERNOC to ensure compliance.

Coordinates with LEED Program Manager to ensure all new construction and renovation projects control systems comply with LEED NC/EB requirements.

Assists the Campus Sustainability Manager to ensure accurate reporting of energy information for the Campus Green House Gas Management Plan and the California Climate Action Registry. Works with EH&S and SBAPCD (Santa Barbara Air Pollution Control District) to ensure compliance and reporting of UCSB's emission levels.

Assists Budget and Planning and DC&S for the review and support of the Campus Long Range Development Plan.

5% Other Duties- Assists in the implementation of programs designed to optimize energy usage on campus and reduce UCSB's climate change impact.
