The Office of Externships helps facilitate student job placement in externships to help school of law students gain practical experience and fulfill necessary degree requirements.

Job Summary


Under general direction of the Assistant Dean of Career Services, the Director of Externships will have year-round responsibility for the ten current externship programs at the School of Law. Collaborate closely with faculty, externship site supervisors, and the Office of Career Services to develop and monitor placements. In collaboration with the Assistant Dean of Career Services and others, provide leadership, conceive strategies, manage budget, and deliver innovations to ensure optimal law student and program success. Counsel and support law students regarding externship opportunities, as well as academic and career planning. Develop and facilitate new and existing externship opportunities for the School of Law students. Ensure that King Hall's externship programs and curriculum comply with the ABA requirements for experiential education programs. Assist with conducting, refining, and developing other student support-related programs to meet developing needs. This position will hold a split appointment as a Unit 18 lecturer during the academic year. Non-Senate Instructional (Lecturers)

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education/Experience:

  • J.D. degree and Bar admission in California or another jurisdiction.
  • Program management experience to work with full independence and flexibility to exercise good judgment under general consultative direction of upper management.
  • Experience in program development to design, plan, implement, and evaluate programs in a university environment.
  • Experience in strategic planning to formulate goals, monitor expenses, allocate resources and assess outcomes.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

  • Analytical skills to gather and interpret data, identify trends, anticipate impacts, and implement proposals on policy and practices.
  • Organizational skills to prioritize and complete tasks with immediate and conflicting deadlines and changes; and to multi-task while working on a myriad of complex projects with simultaneous or overlapping due dates and established deadlines.
  • Problem solving, judgment and decision-making skills. Written and oral communication skills to prepare written reports, correspondence, proposals, program assessments, justifications, and to present information to individuals and groups.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Education/Experience:             

  • Experience working with students on externship or career placement, including broad knowledge of the different opportunities throughout the legal profession.
  • Experience working collaboratively with faculty and/or senior campus administrators to achieve organizational objectives.
  • Professional legal experience working as an attorney.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

  • Knowledge of University of California and UC Davis academic policies and procedures, and ABA requirements.
