Job Description

The Community Education Specialist 1 will conduct youth development programming, lead activities, and assist community events (as required) using UC approved curricula. Recruit program participants to meet established enrollment and outcome requirements, and track and maintain required program-related paperwork, inventory, activity reports, and other documentation. Assist with planning special events in collaboration with UC ANR program leadership and community partners. Work to establish relationships with new partners. May be responsible for collecting and compiling enrollment documentation, evaluation data, maintenance and delivery of educational curricula, inventory, and report writing. Participate in approved training and developmental activities to learn and maintain programmatic and subject matter competence. Perform data entry of program-related paperwork into shared database.

This position is a career appointment that is 50% fixed.

Pay Scale: $20.98/hour to $27.63/hour

Key Responsibilities:

50%

Using the approved adult and youth curricula and lesson activities, prepares

demonstrations, physical activity, and specific lesson activity. Delivers lessons utilizing

adult and youth learning techniques. Acquire and maintain a working knowledge of current curricula related to key messages positively impacting behavior change. Motivate audience to adopt improved practices based on education materials. Inventory and distribute education materials to extenders and participants.

Coordinates with supervisor and/or lead to manage participant enrollment and meet

enrollment and outcome goals. Coordinates with other team members to develop new relationships in order to ensure continued program enrollment as needed.

10%

Prepares and makes available monthly activity reports and attendance records. Files

completed enrollment and pre- post-evaluations. Assist with collection and compilation of yearly enrollment, documentation, and evaluation data from participants and nutrition education extenders. Work with supervisor to utilize evaluation data when delivering program lessons.

Maintains community partner relations through newsletters, social media, etc. Attends

community events and meetings. Connects with partner agencies to provide feedback on class outcomes. Renews current partners for additional classes when current series is completed. Assists supervisor and other educators in recruitment of new agencies. Shares knowledge with agencies/organizations as they develop policies and procedures. Works with supervisor and program team to ensure outreach to all eligible ethnic groups and races.

Participate in approved training opportunities, updates and staff meetings. May provide assistance to volunteers.

 

Requirements:

  • High school diploma and / or equivalent certification / experience / training
  • Basic knowledge of or experience in education subject matter such as: nutrition, health science, S.T.E.M., community education or a related field.
  • Ability to interact, speak in public, and conduct group teaching sessions in a variety of settings.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access), internet, database, email, and calendaring.
  • Experience communicating and maintaining positive interactions with individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Experience working cooperatively as well as independently.
  • Organizational skills to develop course of action, keep a schedule, monitor project plans, and review and analyze results.
  • Knowledge of or experience with educational principals and methods.

Preferred Skills:

  • Bilingual skills (verbal and written) in English and Spanish/Hmong/Vietnamese/Mandarin or other language spoken in the local community.
  • Experience working with low-income youth and families.
  • Training and/or marketing experience.
  • Applicable knowledge of web-based tools (websites, blogs, Facebook, Twitter, etc.).
  • Basic effective reading, verbal, written communications and presentation skills to interact with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to maintain positive interactions with others and work cooperatively.
  • Continuing education in related field required.

Special Conditions of Employment:

  • Travel including travel outside normal business hours may be requested.
  • Must possess valid California Driver's License to drive a County or University vehicle. Ability and means to travel on a flexible schedule as needed, proof of liability damage insurance on vehicle used is required. Reimbursement of job-related travel will be reimbursed according to University policies.
