Department Overview
Graduate, Undergraduate and Equity Affairs at the UC Office of the President provides leadership and support for efforts that advance UC equity and inclusion, close equity gaps, promote access to and successful completion of baccalaureate and graduate degrees, and help to provide an exemplary University experience for all. UC Online is a policy and support unit for the University of California Office of the President (UCOP), based out of the division of Academic Affairs and within the Graduate, Undergraduate and Equity Affairs (GUEA) department. Since its founding UC Online has supported more than 500,000 students and citizens to meet their educational goals, through initiatives such as methodology-forward technological innovation, professional development, and the UC's Cross Campus Enrollment System (CCES). 

Position Summary
Reporting to the Executive Director of UC Online and working alongside UC Online leaders, the Director of Academic Technology will lead UC Online's technical efforts to ensure full deployment, implementation and integration across multiple platforms and technologies related to its mission, including the provision of training, academic and instructional support services to faculty and staff across the UC system and at the Office of the President. They will serve as the key liaison with campus academic technology and information technology staff and leadership, as well as senior leadership within UCOP able to interpret business requirements into technical specificity and vice versa. The position is responsible for documenting and reporting on the specifications of position scope, and the relationship of level of effort in support activities with organizational costs and return on investment. Additionally, they will cultivate academic collaborations between faculty, academic and technical administrators on educational initiatives, and lead the effective delivery and continuous improvement of UC Online's core educational technology environment, including the Learning Management System (LMS) and affiliated technology ecosystems for a system of nearly 300,000 students. Duties include: leading the operations of systems and services to help deliver important academic programs across multiple modalities including credit-bearing, continuing education, international programs, and special programs; significant aptitude with software including Instructure, SalesForce, Jenzebar, and the Student Information System (SIS) and Learning Technologies Interoperability (LTI) marketplace; ensuring proper solutions and knowledge management best practices are followed and integrating continual service improvements to refine and improve effectiveness and efficiency; managing the adoption, integration, configuration, and deployment for the full-spectrum solution portfolio necessary to ensure student learning. This position is eligible for a remote work arrangement within the state of California. The selected candidate must reside within the state of California or be willing to relocate.

Key Responsibilities

30% Strategic Leadership: Work as part of a small interdependent team within Office of the President that is responsible for facilitating and establishing academic, strategic and operational goals for UC Online, and overseeing their effective realization and cross-fertilization. Pursues strategic opportunities to advance the University of California mission by developing innovative online academic solutions, and by positioning UC in a manner to expand its enrollment and achieve its strategic goals. Cultivates collaboration between faculty, academic and technical administrators to provide online offerings in formats meeting student needs and campus strategies. Serves as key liaison between UC Online/UCOP and governance structures such as the Educational Technology Leadership Committee.

 

30% Technical: Integrates academic curriculum and technological solutions strategically to operate and enhance online programs and offerings and encourage appropriate technology-based enhancements across the curriculum. Directs and coordinates the advancement, management and operation of UC Online projects in a manner that supports and furthers the efforts of campus ATS and ITS. Provides critical subject matter expertise and advice to institutional leaders regarding market positioning and opportunities to invest staffing in viable initiatives. Sets priorities, executes and leads new initiatives, programs & projects.

 

25% Management: Line management for at least seven FTE including three technology leads, three developers and a senior support and professional development instigator. Oversight responsibility for service provider and technology partners working under contract to UC Online projects, ensuring their effective interoperation and ultimately functional operation and timely release of new projects and features. Develops and manages annual budgets for the organization and performs periodic cost and productivity analyses. Drives unit's performance to continual improvement.

 

10% Communications: Communicates directly with faculty, instructors and technological staff regarding programmatic goals and directions. Acting as UC Online's primary liaison to UC Chief Information Officers and Education Technology leads. Stays abreast of and, when appropriate, leads innovative industry developments, focusing in particular on intersection of technology, teaching and learning. Advocates for the support of system-wide engagements for online education in service to the mission of the UC System.

 

5% Other Duties: Attends classes, seminars and conferences that enhance professional expertise and foster managerial competency. Participates in activities that enhance the UC community and support the university mission. Upholds the organization's Principles of Community and assures that those values are upheld throughout the department. Other duties as assigned.


Experience
Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years of leadership experience in colleges or universities and/or in higher education adjacent industries.
  • Minimum of 5 years of program development experience involving technological management.

  • Excellent professional and persuasive communication skills, most notably through written and oral modalities
  • Experience navigating complex and nuanced situations, leveraging creativity and adaptability to find innovative solutions.
  • Foundational knowledge about topics relevant to educational technology, data systems, organizational management and more.
  • Experience working effectively with intra- or inter-campus constituents, building project-based coalitions with staff who in many cases are not direct reports.
  • A commitment to promoting and enhancing equity, diversity and inclusion.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement short- and long-range systems, capacity, technology, and operational plans.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully direct, coordinate, and strategically integrate multiple developmental, enhancement, and/or modification projects at an institutional level.

Education
Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree in the field of education, computer science, business, communications, OR a Bachelor's degree and commensurate experience in one of the above fields

The University of California, Office of the President, is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The full salary range shows the growth potential for this position and the pay scale is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position.
